“I’ve had people in my life who reminded me of both of these characters — people who come out of prison looking for a second chance, and single mothers who are doing everything they can to provide for their children,” Perry told PEOPLE.

Perry was also drawn to the idea that two people who appear completely different from the outside could understand each other’s struggles in ways that others cannot.

“These are the people that are the most not seen or heard in our society,” he told PEOPLE.

Rather than presenting Anika and Carousel as obvious romantic partners, Perry wanted the film to begin with their apparent differences.

One is a mother who once worked inside the prison system.

The other is a man who was incarcerated by that system.

On the surface, their backgrounds seem to place them on opposite sides of an enormous divide.

But Perry’s story is interested in what happens once those labels are stripped away.
