Murder in a Small Town Renewed for Season 3 as Peter Gallagher Joins the Hit Fox Mystery
Fans of Murder in a Small Town have another trip to Gibsons ahead. Fox has officially renewed the coastal crime drama for a third season, with Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk returning to lead the series — and Peter Gallagher joining the cast as a potentially disruptive new presence.
The renewal keeps the cozy mystery on Fox’s 2026-27 schedule following a second season that continued to build its audience. Fox said Season 2 improved on the first season’s seven-day multiplatform audience by 11% and delivered series highs in both total multiplatform viewing and streaming.
Karl Alberg and Cassandra Lee are returning

Based on the mystery novels by L.R. Wright, Murder in a Small Town follows Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland), a former big-city detective who relocates to the picturesque coastal community of Gibsons hoping for a quieter existence.
It doesn’t quite work out that way.
Beneath the town’s idyllic appearance lies no shortage of secrets, and Karl repeatedly finds himself investigating murders that disturb the peace of his supposedly tranquil new home.
Alongside those investigations is his relationship with local librarian Cassandra Lee, played by Kristin Kreuk. Cassandra has become increasingly involved in community life, including serving on the town council during the second season.
The combination of murder mysteries, small-town characters and Karl and Cassandra’s developing relationship has helped give the series its distinctive cozy-crime identity.
“We love bringing this cozy and delightful mystery to Fox fans,” Fox drama executive Brooke Bowman said when announcing the renewal, adding that the network was pleased the series had continued to connect with viewers.
Peter Gallagher joins Season 3

Season three will introduce a major new character played by Peter Gallagher, known for The O.C. and Grace and Frankie.
Gallagher will portray Rod Finlayson, whom Fox describes as charismatic, fiercely independent and capable, but also unreliable.
Rod arrives at the Gibsons marina aboard his beloved boat, and his presence is set to trigger a series of upheavals that Karl and Cassandra will have to confront. Fox has even positioned the newcomer as an adversarial presence for the show’s central couple.
That makes Gallagher more than a simple guest addition. His character appears positioned to play a significant role in the next chapter of the story.
A cozy mystery with plenty of darkness underneath

The central appeal of Murder in a Small Town comes from the contrast between its surroundings and the crimes Karl investigates.
Gibsons appears to offer exactly the escape he wanted after years of demanding big-city police work. Instead, the seemingly peaceful community repeatedly proves that beautiful surroundings don’t necessarily mean peaceful lives.
The series balances those murder investigations with Karl’s personal relationships, particularly his romance with Cassandra. Their relationship has gradually developed alongside the show’s individual mysteries, giving the drama a continuing emotional storyline beyond its cases.
The second-season finale pushed that relationship forward considerably when Karl asked Cassandra to marry him. The episode ended before viewers received a definitive answer, leaving their future as one of the major threads heading into season three.
Fox continues investing in the series
Murder in a Small Town is produced by Sepia Films in association with Fox Entertainment and Future Shack Entertainment.
Ian Weir, Amanda Tapping, Morris Ruskin, Sharon Wisnia, Tina Pehme, Kim Roberts, Jeff Wachtel and Jared Berenholz serve as executive producers, while Nick Orchard of Soapbox Productions, which originally optioned Wright’s novels, serves as producer.
The renewal places the series alongside other returning Fox dramas including Doc and Memory of a Killer on the network’s 2026-27 slate.
For viewers already invested in Karl and Cassandra, the combination of their unresolved relationship, another collection of small-town mysteries and Gallagher’s intriguing newcomer gives season three plenty of material to explore.
Murder in a Small Town will return for Season 3 during Fox’s 2026-27 television season. As of August 2026, Fox has not announced a specific premiere date.
