YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’VE WALKED INTO. Anne Hathaway And Dakota Johnson Descend Into A Twisted Psychological Nightmare In The New Verity Trailer—Where Desire Turns Dangerous And Every Version Of The Truth Feels Like A Trap

‘Verity’ Trailer Sends Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett Into a Dangerous Web of Secrets, Obsession and Deception

A secluded mansion, a famous author unable to finish her work and a hidden manuscript containing deeply disturbing revelations set the stage for Verity, Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming psychological mystery thriller.

The studio has released the full trailer for the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, offering a dark first look at a story built around attraction, deception and the growing uncertainty over which character can actually be trusted.

Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett lead the film, which arrives in theaters on October 2, 2026.

Johnson stars as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer presented with an opportunity that could transform her career.

She is hired by Jeremy Crawford, played by Hartnett, to complete the successful book series written by his wife, Verity Crawford, portrayed by Hathaway.

Verity has been left paralyzed following a mysterious accident and is unable to finish the novels herself. To take over the project, Lowen moves into the Crawfords’ impressive home and begins searching through Verity’s notes and unfinished material.

But among those papers, she discovers something far more troubling than she expected.

Lowen finds a manuscript containing disturbing information about Verity, raising unsettling questions about the author’s psychological state and whether she could have connections to darker events.

From that point, what began as a professional assignment becomes increasingly dangerous.

Secrets, Attraction and a Growing Sense of Danger

The trailer places Lowen directly inside the complicated world of Jeremy and Verity as the boundaries between work and personal relationships begin to disappear.

There are suspicious looks, mounting sexual tension and secrets surrounding the Crawford family, while Hathaway’s Verity remains deliberately difficult to read.

Is she as helpless as she appears, or does she understand far more about what is happening around her?

The trailer doesn’t provide an answer, instead reinforcing the uncertainty with an ominous warning:

“This is your final warning. Only darkness ahead.”

The Crawford mansion plays a major role in creating that atmosphere. Its enormous, isolated setting provides a striking backdrop as Lowen ventures deeper into Verity’s private world and begins uncovering information she may never have been intended to see.

Anne Hathaway Leads a Mystery Built Around Trust

Much of the film’s intrigue rests on Verity herself.

Her physical condition appears to make her vulnerable, yet the discoveries inside her home encourage Lowen — and the audience — to question that assumption.

Meanwhile, Lowen is gradually entering almost every part of Verity’s former life: her work, her home and increasingly her relationship with Jeremy.

Alongside Hathaway, Johnson and Hartnett, the supporting cast includes Ismael Cruz Córdova, Brady Wagner, Irina Dvorovenko, K.K. Moggie and Michael Abbott Jr.

Michael Showalter Directs Colleen Hoover Adaptation

Michael Showalter directs Verity, adding the psychological thriller to a varied filmography that includes The Baxter, Hello My Name Is Doris, The Big Sick, The Lovebirds, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Spoiler Alert, The Idea of You and Oh. What. Fun.

The screenplay comes from Nick Antosca, whose previous credits include The Forest, Antlers, Channel Zero, The Act and Cape Fear.

The combination of an isolated setting, an unsettling manuscript and three characters whose relationships become increasingly complicated gives the film plenty of room for psychological tension.

And the trailer makes one thing particularly clear: Lowen may have entered the Crawford mansion looking for the opportunity of a lifetime, but what she discovers inside could leave her wishing she had never opened Verity’s manuscript.

Verity arrives in theaters October 2, 2026.
