The 1% Club Lost 20 Players on Its Very First ‘Simple’ Question — and Even Lee Mack Couldn’t Believe the Carnage
The 1% Club had barely started when Lee Mack was already staring at one of the biggest opening-round disasters the show had seen.
There were 100 contestants standing at the beginning.
One supposedly straightforward 90% question later, 20 of them were gone.
The question involved nothing more complicated than a puppeteer, a puppet and knowing which hand needed to move.
It looked like exactly the kind of puzzle contestants should breeze through.
Instead, one fifth of the entire studio was eliminated within the opening minute.
Even Mack couldn’t hide his disbelief.
The 90% Question Looked Almost Too Easy
As usual, contestants weren’t being tested on obscure trivia or specialist knowledge.
They simply needed to think carefully about what they were seeing.
A graphic showed a puppeteer controlling a puppet with strings.
Mack asked:
“In order to move the puppet’s left arm, does the puppeteer need to move their own left hand or right hand?”
Contestants had to choose between the two possibilities.
Because this was the 90% question, the premise suggested that roughly nine out of ten members of the public should be capable of solving it.
But the studio results were dramatically different.
Twenty Contestants Were Immediately Eliminated
When the answers were revealed, 20 players had chosen incorrectly.
The correct response was:
Right hand.
Because the puppeteer was positioned facing the puppet, the puppet’s left side corresponded with the puppeteer’s right.
It was a simple perspective trap.
And it caused absolute carnage.
“Holy flips! We’ve lost 20 people!” Mack exclaimed.
The reaction from the studio was so strong that the host added:
“I don’t think we’ve ever had such a loud, ‘Oh my God’ on the show before!”
Instead of beginning the next stage with close to the full field, The 1% Club had already lost one contestant in every five.
One Contestant Had an Unusual Explanation
Among those eliminated was Scarlett, a micro pig trainer.
Her problem wasn’t necessarily the puppet.
It was left and right themselves.
“I don’t actually know my left and right so it was just close my eyes and guess,” she admitted.
Unfortunately, the gamble sent her straight out of the competition.
And she had plenty of company.
Viewers Couldn’t Believe 20 People Missed It
The extraordinary elimination immediately became a talking point among viewers.
“20 already?!” one person posted on X.
Another reacted: “Unreal that 20 got that wrong!”
A third couldn’t understand how so many contestants had fallen at the first hurdle, describing it as the show’s first “simple question.”
Another viewer jokingly compared the eliminated contestants to the very puppets featured in the puzzle.
The reaction was understandable.
A 90% question is supposed to provide a relatively gentle introduction.
This one eliminated 20% of the entire field.
The Survivors Still Had a £98,000 Prize to Chase
Despite the brutal opening, the episode eventually produced a very different ending.
Three contestants made it all the way to the 1% question and successfully solved it.
That meant the £98,000 prize pot was divided between the three winners.
The dramatic episode formed part of the show’s return to ITV1, with four new installments airing from Monday through Thursday that week.
Two Christmas specials were also scheduled for the month, alongside another episode hosted by Mack in support of Soccer Aid.
A Brutal Reminder Not to Trust the Percentage
Since launching in 2022, The 1% Club has built its reputation on questions that often look far easier than they really are.
This opening puzzle demonstrated that perfectly.
No specialist knowledge was required.
There were only two possible answers.
And it was supposedly a question that 90% of people should solve.
Yet 20 contestants still disappeared from the game immediately.
One puppet. Two hands. Only two possible answers — and somehow The 1% Club had already wiped out a fifth of its contestants before the game had properly begun.
