Outer Banks Season 5 Ending Explained: The Pogues Finally Get Their Happy Ending, But JJ’s Fate Comes With One Heartbreaking Truth

After five seasons of treasure hunts, betrayals, near-death escapes and devastating losses, the Pogues finally get something they have rarely been allowed to enjoy: a victory.

The Outer Banks finale brings John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, Cleo and even Rafe to the end of their journeys, while finally returning the Royal Merchant gold to the group that began searching for it years earlier.

But the ending isn’t simply about $400 million in treasure. It also forces Kiara to confront the loss of JJ, gives several characters unexpected second chances and brings the story full circle with a wedding at the rebuilt Chateau.

Does JJ Return in Outer Banks Season 5?

Despite the mystery surrounding the Blue Crown, JJ does not physically return from the dead.

Rudy Pankow makes no new appearances during Season 5. Instead, Episode 9 revisits JJ through Kiara’s memories after she obtains the Blue Crown, a treasure believed to possess the power to resurrect the dead.

Kiara takes it to the prophesied lake in Azerbaijan during a meteor shower and repeatedly recites the Crown’s incantation, desperately asking JJ to return.

Nothing appears to happen.

Then a brilliant shooting star approaches and surrounds Kiara in white light, triggering memories of her childhood with JJ and the years they later spent together as Pogues.

A younger JJ repeatedly reminds her that when terrible things happen, sometimes “you just gotta let it go.”

That ultimately becomes the Crown’s real significance for Kiara. Instead of physically bringing JJ back, the experience helps her begin releasing some of the grief she has been carrying.

Creator Shannon Burke explained that the writers wanted to approach JJ’s presence carefully.

“We were trying to thread a needle where he’s not really coming back in corporal form, but we wanted to make it satisfying,” Burke told Tudum.

Whether the Crown actually possesses supernatural powers is deliberately left unresolved.

The Pogues Lose the Blue Crown

Kiara’s emotional breakthrough doesn’t mean the Pogues get to keep the treasure.

Finch and the Corsairs locate her after the ritual and take the Blue Crown. By the beginning of Episode 10, the Pogues are heading home from Azerbaijan without it.

What they still have, however, is each other.

And when they return to Kildare, another crisis is already waiting.

A Hurricane Brings the Story Full Circle

The final episode sends a massive hurricane toward the Outer Banks, forcing the island to evacuate.

According to creator Josh Pate, that was deliberate. The team wanted hurricanes to “bookend” the beginning and ending of the series.

As the storm intensifies, the Pogues become separated.

John B and Sarah head for their boats, while Pope and Kiara reunite with their families. Pope eventually finds himself stranded at sea with his father, Heyward, clinging to the Outer Banks — Paradise on Earth sign.

Amid the chaos, Heyward tells Pope that he loves him and acknowledges everything his son has endured.

John B and Sarah eventually rescue them, while Kiara’s determination to settle one final score sends her directly toward another confrontation.

Kiara Finally Faces Groff

Kiara discovers that a Kook yacht has been stolen near Blackstone Manor and immediately suspects Groff, JJ’s killer.

Her instincts are correct.

Groff has also stolen the Royal Merchant gold.

Kiara boards his yacht and hides until she can attack, stabbing him in the side. Groff eventually gains the advantage and holds her at knifepoint, taunting her that she had already missed her opportunity to kill him.

Kiara proves otherwise.

She activates a mechanism that pulls Groff upward by a rope. The mast eventually snaps, and Kiara cuts the line. Groff falls into the water with the mast coming down on him, ending their confrontation.

The sequence was filmed in an industrial port using giant fans and bulldozers to generate the violent storm conditions around the actors.

Do the Pogues Finally Recover the Royal Merchant Gold?

Yes — although they nearly lose it again.

After defeating Groff, Kiara tries to control his yacht and sends an SOS call. The Pogues receive her coordinates from the lighthouse.

With the boat struggling in the storm, Kiara begins throwing some of the gold overboard to reduce its weight. She eventually falls into the water herself and fires flares to reveal her position.

Her friends rescue her, but the yacht — and apparently the treasure — sinks.

Pope, however, starts calculating where the gold should have ended up.

Once the hurricane passes, the Pogues search the waters. John B eventually emerges holding a gold bar.

The rest is beneath him.

After everything the Pogues endured, the original Royal Merchant treasure is finally theirs — approximately $400 million in gold.

What Happens to Rafe?

Rafe also receives an unexpected second chance.

After helping Sofia escape jail, he becomes a fugitive. Once the hurricane passes, the Pogues help Rafe and Sofia secure a boat so they can disappear south.

Pope even promises they will claim the vessel was lost during the storm.

It’s an extraordinary truce considering the years of conflict between Rafe and the Pogues.

His goodbye with Sarah is particularly emotional. Rafe apologizes for everything he has done, and the siblings embrace knowing he may never return to the Outer Banks or meet Sarah’s baby.

John B jokingly tells him to send a postcard from Rio, although the finale never reveals exactly where Rafe and Sofia eventually settle.

He doesn’t attend John B and Sarah’s wedding in person, either. However, the credits reveal that Rafe joins the celebration through FaceTime.

Pope and Cleo Finally Get Their Future Together

Cleo’s story also receives a hopeful conclusion.

After being deported to Nassau in Episode 9, she returns to working on boats with Stubbs. Pope promises to find a solution, although Cleo warns that returning to the United States could put both of them in legal trouble.

Once the Pogues recover the Royal Merchant fortune, Pope travels to the Bahamas.

He proposes to Cleo again.

This time, she says yes.

They eventually return to the United States, and Cleo is shown celebrating with the Heyward family while holding her naturalization certificate.

What Do the Pogues Do With $400 Million?

Rather than simply disappearing with their fortune, the Pogues use their money to rebuild the community that has always been their home.

John B reconstructs the Chateau almost exactly as it was, although this time it finally gets central air conditioning.

Pope rebuilds Heyward’s Seafood for his parents and makes Tannyhill his home with Cleo. Sarah gives him the property, effectively returning “Tannyhill back to a Tanny.”

Kiara purchases the old Maybank property where JJ grew up and begins restoring it, including tending a flourishing garden. She also gives her parents a yacht.

Most importantly, the Pogues create a memorial bench on the beach for their lost friend.

It reads: “In Memory of JJ Maybank.”

Kiara Finally Finds Her Own Path

Kiara’s ending isn’t defined solely by losing JJ.

With Groff gone and some measure of peace finally restored, she begins pursuing the future she had wanted for herself.

She becomes a marine biology intern with the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries, remaining on the island and working to protect the environment she loves.

Madison Bailey described Kiara as having “a new sense of peace” by the conclusion, both with her family and herself.

Sarah and John B Welcome Baby JJ

Another major chapter begins when Sarah gives birth with John B beside her.

It’s a girl.

And they name their daughter JJ, ensuring their lost friend’s name remains part of the Pogues’ future.

For Chase Stokes, reaching this point with John B and Sarah was especially meaningful after everything the characters had survived. He said he and Madelyn Cline worked to ensure the couple’s final chapter felt honest and fully developed.

But there is still one piece of unfinished business.

John B and Sarah Finally Make Their Marriage Official

After baby JJ arrives, John B and Sarah celebrate their wedding at the rebuilt Chateau.

The guest list turns the scene into something of an Outer Banks reunion. Mr. Sunn, Wheezie, Rose, Pope’s parents, Shoupe, Kiara’s parents, Barry and even Sarah’s ex Topper are among the familiar faces attending.

Heyward officiates.

The ceremony also calls back to John B and Sarah’s unofficial Season 2 vows, with the couple helping Heyward finish the familiar words about the stars, sky and sea.

For Madelyn Cline, returning to the Chateau was particularly emotional because of its connection to the earliest days of the series.

After the ceremony, John B rings the bell outside his childhood home — something his father Big John once did for him.

This time, John B rings it for his daughter.

“This is how we call you back from the marsh, little JJ,” he tells her.

So, Do the Pogues Really Get a Happy Ending?

Finally, yes — although Outer Banks doesn’t pretend everything they lost can be restored.

JJ remains dead.

The Blue Crown cannot simply erase their grief, and Rafe cannot undo everything he did. But the surviving Pogues finally stop chasing the next treasure long enough to recognize what they have.

John B and Sarah have their daughter and their home. Pope and Cleo are building a life together. Kiara has found purpose and begun making peace with JJ’s death. Their community is being rebuilt.

And the Royal Merchant gold — the treasure that helped launch the entire adventure — finally belongs to them.

After traveling around the world searching for something bigger, the Pogues ultimately find their future exactly where their story began: the Outer Banks, Paradise on Earth.
