Netflix viewers have been enthusiastically recommending a historical drama that many say exceeded their expectations, with some admitting they intended to watch just one episode before finishing the entire series in one sitting.

The four-part miniseries Death by Lightning has emerged repeatedly in online discussions about worthwhile Netflix shows, earning particular praise for its compelling story and performances from Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen.

With only four episodes, viewers say the series is an especially easy binge — and for some, stopping once they have started has proved surprisingly difficult.

The series was highlighted during a Reddit discussion in which one user asked for recommendations beyond Netflix’s most familiar hits.

“I feel like I’ve seen most of the popular ones, but I’m still missing a few gems,” the user wrote, asking others to suggest underrated series or newer shows that had managed to hook them.

Death by Lightning quickly entered the conversation.

One viewer recommended it because “it’s great and it’s an easy binge since it’s only four episodes,” while another agreed, praising both the show and its cast.

Elsewhere, viewers shared similar experiences of racing through the entire miniseries.

“Binged it in one sitting,” one person wrote, describing Shannon and Macfadyen as “mesmerising” while also praising Nick Offerman’s performance as Chester Arthur and the wider supporting cast.

Another viewer said they had originally sat down with their wife intending to watch a single episode, only to unexpectedly finish the entire series.

Others described watching all four episodes in a day, with one admitting the drama was “way better than I thought it would be.”

The true story behind Death by Lightning

Created by Mike Makowsky, Death by Lightning is an American historical drama based on Candice Millard’s 2011 book Destiny of the Republic.

The story centers on James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, portrayed by Michael Shannon. Matthew Macfadyen plays Charles J. Guiteau, the man whose life becomes fatally connected to Garfield’s.

The series follows Garfield’s election and presidency, including his efforts to confront corruption and his commitment to civil rights.

Running alongside his political story is Guiteau’s increasingly consequential presence. Initially a supporter of Garfield, Guiteau ultimately shoots the president, setting in motion the events that lead to Garfield’s death.

The miniseries arrived on Netflix in November 2025 and subsequently received considerable critical praise, particularly for its performances. The American Film Institute later named it among the year’s best television series.

Much of the enthusiastic viewer response has focused on the actors bringing the historical figures to life.

Michael Shannon leads the series as James A. Garfield, while Matthew Macfadyen portrays Charles J. Guiteau.

They are joined by Betty Gilpin as Garfield’s wife, Lucretia Garfield, Shea Whigham as Roscoe Conkling and Nick Offerman as Chester Arthur.

For viewers interested in American history — or simply searching for a tightly constructed drama that does not require committing to several seasons — its four-episode format has helped make Death by Lightning an appealing choice.

And judging by the reactions from viewers who planned to sample a single episode before accidentally watching all four, the series has proved particularly difficult to switch off.
