Only ‘True Geniuses’ Are Supposed To Crack This One — An ‘Impossible’ Only Connect Question Left Viewers Staring At Clues That Seemed To Have Absolutely Nothing In Common, Until One Fiendishly Clever Connection Made The Whole Puzzle Suddenly Click

Impossible question from game show Only Connect

Only Connect’s ‘Impossible’ Alphabet Puzzle Looks Like Gibberish — Until You Spot the Tiny Rule Hidden in Every Line

Only Connect has built its reputation on making intelligent people stare at a screen and wonder whether a collection of apparently random clues could possibly have an answer.

One particularly brutal puzzle did exactly that.

Contestants were shown four lines that appeared to contain little more than chaotic strings of consonants:

BGB GBGB GBG

PTTN GPTT NGPT TNGPT TNGP TTNG

MSS SMS SSM SS SMS SSM SSS

LS TL ST LST LS TL ST

The instruction sounded deceptively simple:

“Five words in alphabetical order.”

At first glance, the task can seem almost impossible.

There are barely any recognizable words on the board. There is no obvious sequence. And crucially, almost all the vowels have disappeared.

But once you understand the rule, every apparently meaningless string begins to make sense.

One of TV’s Toughest Quiz Shows

Only true geniuses can crack 'impossible' TV gameshow question - do you know the answer? - The Mirror

Hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, Only Connect asks teams to identify relationships between clues that may initially appear completely unrelated.

It is less about conventional trivia than recognizing patterns, manipulating language and making unexpected connections.

Contestants need everything from general knowledge to strong linguistic and numerical reasoning.

The format contains four main rounds.

In the opening round, teams attempt to discover the connection between a set of clues.

The second asks them to complete sequences.

Next comes the notoriously difficult Connecting Wall, in which 16 clues must be separated into four groups of four, with contestants also identifying the connection within each group.

Finally comes the Missing Vowels round.

Words or phrases have their vowels removed, their spaces altered, and teams race to reconstruct the original answers.

It was during that final round that this intimidating puzzle appeared.

The Category Was the First Major Clue

The puzzle came from Series 12, Episode 37, featuring the Verbivores and Cosmopolitans.

The category was:

“Five words in alphabetical order.”

That description contains more useful information than it might initially appear.

Each answer is not one word.

Instead, each line represents five different words.

Those five words appear in alphabetical order.

And because this is the Missing Vowels round, the vowels have been stripped away.

The challenge is to put them back.

Try solving the first set before continuing:

BGB GBGB GBG

Five words.

Same basic consonant pattern.

Alphabetical order.

The First Sequence Hides Five Three-Letter Words

The first group expands to:

BAG

BEG

BIG

BOG

BUG

The consonants remain B-G throughout.

Only the middle vowel changes.

And the words appear alphabetically:

A, E, I, O, U.

Once that pattern is visible, the puzzle suddenly seems much more approachable.

But the following groups are longer and considerably easier to overthink.

The Second Line Uses Exactly the Same Trick

The next intimidating sequence was:

PTTN GPTT NGPT TNGPT TNGP TTNG

After restoring the vowels and correct spacing, the five answers become:

PATTING

PETTING

PITTING

POTTING

PUTTING

Once again, the words follow the five vowels in alphabetical order.

The consonant framework remains essentially the same while the vowel changes:

A → E → I → O → U

The apparently random consonants are therefore not random at all.

They are what remains after Only Connect removes the vowels and rearranges the spacing.

The Third Set Follows the Pattern Again

Next came:

MSS SMS SSM SS SMS SSM SSS

The hidden answers are:

MASSES

MESSES

MISSES

MOSSES

MUSSES

Again, each word begins with the same consonant structure while its crucial vowel changes.

And again, the sequence follows:

A, E, I, O, U.

By this stage, anyone who has spotted the mechanism has a major advantage.

The final group becomes less about discovering a completely new rule and more about applying the one already established.

The Final Five Words Are Another A-E-I-O-U Sequence

The final collection was:

LS TL ST LST LS TL ST

The answers are:

LAST

LEST

LIST

LOST

LUST

Once again:

LAST → A

LEST → E

LIST → I

LOST → O

LUST → U

All five words retain the same basic consonant structure — L-ST — while changing the vowel.

And because A comes before E, E before I, I before O and O before U, the words are naturally presented in alphabetical order.

The Full Answer

Put all four sets together and the seemingly impossible puzzle becomes:

BAG — BEG — BIG — BOG — BUG

PATTING — PETTING — PITTING — POTTING — PUTTING

MASSES — MESSES — MISSES — MOSSES — MUSSES

LAST — LEST — LIST — LOST — LUST

Each set contains five words.

Each set cycles through the five vowels:

A — E — I — O — U

And each set is therefore automatically in alphabetical order.

Why It Looks So Much Harder Than It Really Is

The brilliance of the puzzle comes from how much information disappears when the vowels are removed.

Consider:

LAST, LEST, LIST, LOST, LUST

Those words are immediately recognizable.

Strip out the vowels, however, and every one essentially becomes:

LST

The Missing Vowels round also alters the spacing, preventing contestants from simply seeing five identical consonant patterns lined up neatly beside one another.

That transforms a simple vocabulary pattern into something resembling a coded message.

The brain naturally tries to interpret the spaces as meaningful.

But in this round, they are part of the deception.

‘Five Words’ Is Another Important Hint

The category also tells contestants exactly how many answers they need to find.

That matters because there are five conventional vowel letters in English:

A, E, I, O and U.

Once a player connects “five words” with the repeated consonant structures, the vowel pattern becomes a strong possibility.

From there, solving one set can unlock all the others.

B_G is particularly useful.

There are five familiar possibilities:

Bag.

Beg.

Big.

Bog.

Bug.

And those five words are already in alphabetical order.

That is the breakthrough.

It’s the Kind of Puzzle That Looks Obvious Afterwards

That is also what makes the challenge so frustrating.

Once the answer is displayed, it can feel almost embarrassingly simple.

Of course BGB GBGB GBG contains BAG, BEG, BIG, BOG and BUG.

Of course the vowels run A-E-I-O-U.

But contestants do not receive the explanation first.

They have to discover that structure while playing a rapid-fire television quiz, with another team ready to buzz in.

That gap between “impossible before the answer” and “obvious after the answer” is precisely where Only Connect thrives.

The Show Has a History of Brutal Questions

This was hardly the first time Only Connect produced a puzzle capable of baffling contestants and viewers.

Over the years, Coren Mitchell has introduced questions ranging from highly obscure connections to sequences requiring several separate mental leaps before the solution becomes visible.

She has even described one previous challenge as “the most difficult question we’ve ever had,” while another earned the distinction of being her “least favourite question.”

The show’s difficulty has become an important part of its appeal.

Viewers are not necessarily expected to know every answer.

Much of the fun comes from staring at something apparently incomprehensible and waiting for the moment when the hidden connection finally clicks.

This Missing Vowels challenge is a perfect example.

At first:

BGB GBGB GBG

looks like gibberish.

After seeing the solution:

BAG, BEG, BIG, BOG, BUG

it becomes difficult to unsee.

And that is the cruel beauty of the puzzle: nothing obscure was hiding behind those letters.

The vowels were missing right in front of you.
