Only Connect is usually built around obscure connections, brutal sequences and the occasional answer that leaves viewers shouting at the television.
But one episode produced a very different kind of reaction when a team unexpectedly broke into song in the middle of the quiz.
During the September 1, 2025 episode, Victoria Coren Mitchell welcomed the Jive Bunnies and the Sorcerers, with the three ballroom dancers taking on a team of devoted Dungeons & Dragons players.
Only a few minutes into the match, the Sorcerers found themselves facing a music-related sequence that eventually led to one of the strangest interludes of the episode.
The clues pointed toward Wicked
Among the clues shown to the Sorcerers were “Defying Gravity” and “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space.”
The team could not work out the intended answer before their chance was gone.
That might normally have been the end of the exchange.
Instead, Coren Mitchell drew attention to the musical connection and told them they had not been able to hear the chorus, adding that if they had, it might have gone a certain way.
The contestants immediately picked up the cue.
Within seconds, the quiz had temporarily turned into something closer to a musical performance.
The Sorcerers launched into ‘Defying Gravity’
The team began enthusiastically singing “Defying Gravity,” the best-known song from the musical Wicked.
Coren Mitchell played along, waving her arms as though conducting the impromptu performance.
Another contestant even joined in.
At one point, someone apparently wondered aloud whether the moment would survive the edit.
“This won’t air?” they said.
Coren Mitchell’s response was immediate:
“Oh it will.”
And she was right.
The entire exchange made it into the broadcast.
Viewers were baffled by the moment
The unexpected singalong quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from the episode.
Some viewers found the sequence funny simply because it was so far removed from the normally controlled rhythm of Only Connect.
Others found it painfully awkward.
One viewer joked that the programme should have been shown after the watershed because the singing might “scare the kids.”
Another complained about the editing of the sequence, while a separate viewer described the singing as “so awkward” and questioned why the moment had been left in.
For a programme usually dominated by silent concentration and increasingly desperate attempts to spot hidden connections, the sudden burst of musical theatre was certainly difficult to ignore.
The Sorcerers still came out on top
The unusual performance did not derail the Sorcerers.
By the end of the episode, they had beaten the Jive Bunnies by 20 points to 15.
The September 1 match formed part of Series 21, with official listings describing the episode as the contest between the Jive Bunnies and Sorcerers.
So despite missing the question that triggered the singalong, the Sorcerers still walked away with the more important result.
The episode came amid another viewer complaint over a picture clue
The musical moment was not the only time viewers had recently found themselves arguing with Only Connect.
Earlier in the series, eagle-eyed fans objected to a picture question whose intended connection was “rocket.”
The first images included snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan, nicknamed “The Rocket,” and Marvel character Rocket Raccoon.
Those clues were enough for the contestants to identify the connection correctly.
Coren Mitchell then revealed two additional images that would have appeared had the sequence continued: rocket salad and what the programme identified as Stephenson’s Rocket.
That final image caused the problem.
Viewers said the locomotive was the wrong one
Some viewers immediately argued that the picture did not show Stephenson’s Rocket at all.
Instead, they identified the engine as Locomotion.
One viewer complained that the programme had made its “first mistake” of the new series, while another remarked that it had happened on the very first question.
The same criticism also appeared among Only Connect fans online, with viewers pointing out that the locomotive pictured appeared to be Locomotion rather than Stephenson’s Rocket.
It was a small visual detail, but on a programme where every clue is supposed to be precise enough to support a specific connection, viewers were quick to notice.
Only Connect viewers rarely let anything slide
That level of scrutiny is hardly surprising.
The entire appeal of Only Connect depends on precision.
Contestants are asked to spot links between things that may initially appear completely unrelated, meaning a misleading image or ambiguous clue can change the way a puzzle is interpreted.
At the same time, the show has always allowed room for Coren Mitchell’s dry humour and the occasional moment of chaos between questions.
The Sorcerers’ spontaneous rendition of “Defying Gravity” landed firmly in that second category.
It did nothing to help them solve the clue.
It did, however, produce one of the episode’s most memorable moments — and ensured that, for once, viewers were talking almost as much about the singing as the connections.
