Only Connect Contestant Sparks Backlash With ‘I’m Grown Up’ Twilight Dig — Before Her Teammate Proves The Connection Was Right
An Only Connect contestant managed to annoy viewers with just three words after appearing to dismiss a Twilight connection as something she was simply too “grown up” to know.
Kat Brown was competing alongside her teammates when a Connecting Wall began pointing toward characters from the hugely successful vampire franchise.
Her teammate Sara Benwell spotted the link.
Kat was far less convinced.
And when Sara suggested that names including Swan, Cullen and Black were connected through Twilight, Kat delivered the line that immediately caught viewers’ attention.
“I couldn’t possibly tell you that Sara, I’m grown up.”
The exchange was apparently intended as a joke. But plenty of people watching at home did not initially take it that way.
Three Names Suddenly Pointed Towards ‘Twilight’
The moment came during the Connecting Wall, where contestants are presented with 16 apparently unrelated words and must divide them into four groups of four, identifying the connection between each set.
With half of the wall already solved, the team still had several possibilities to untangle.
Then Sara noticed something.
The surnames Swan and Cullen appeared among the remaining clues.
They are the surnames of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, the central characters in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series and its blockbuster film adaptations.
Another clue made the potential connection considerably stronger.
Black could refer to Jacob Black, the character played by Taylor Lautner in the films.
Sara quickly began putting the pieces together.
“Oh Swan, is from the same, they are all specifically from Twilight aren’t they?” she said.
Instead of immediately agreeing, however, Kat shook her head and delivered her dry response.
“I couldn’t possibly tell you that Sara, I’m grown up.”
Viewers Immediately Called The Remark ‘Snobby’
The brief exchange was enough to ignite reaction among viewers.
Some interpreted Kat’s comment as suggesting that Twilight was beneath her — particularly striking on a programme already famous for its highbrow reputation and extremely difficult questions.

Another appeared to enjoy the consequences when the team struggled to capitalize on the connection, writing: “Did slightly enjoy a team losing 3 points because the captain was too dismissive of Twilight aka the greatest work of literature of the 21st century.”
For another viewer, the exchange became one of the episode’s highlights.
“I wouldn’t possibly know about that” re: Twilight is possibly my favourite moment on #OnlyConnect this series,” they wrote.
A fourth viewer said the awkward interaction between Kat and Sara had made them “laugh out loud.”
Sara Was Convinced She Had Cracked It
Despite Kat’s reluctance, Sara continued pushing the Twilight theory.
She believed the surnames were too significant to be a coincidence and wanted the team to use the connection.
Kat remained cautious, arguing that they did not yet have enough evidence to confidently commit to the group.
The disagreement created an awkwardly funny moment as Sara became increasingly confident that she knew exactly what the wall was doing.
Eventually, her instinct proved correct.
The team successfully found the group and identified the connection.
Swan, Cullen and Black really were pointing toward Twilight.
For viewers already amused or irritated by Kat’s “grown up” remark, the confirmation only made the exchange more memorable.
Kat Insisted She Was Making A Joke
After the episode, Kat responded to criticism online and rejected suggestions that she had genuinely been looking down on Twilight fans.
The remark, she explained, was intended as a joke.
“I was making a joke and came to regret it not least not having read the books since 2010,” she wrote.
She later addressed the moment again while referencing teammate Sara’s love of another television programme.
“Nobody has been more sad than @sarabenwell over Taskmaster (which she adores) than me and my very silly Twilight joke 🙄 (I read them in 2010 and didn’t bloody remember).”
Her explanation put the exchange into a rather different context.
Far from being completely unfamiliar with Twilight, Kat said she had actually read the books in 2010 — she simply could not remember the connection when the pressure was on.

Kat’s dry delivery made the line easy to interpret as a swipe at the franchise and its fans.

Kat eventually made clear that her comment had been playful rather than a serious judgment of Twilight or the people who enjoy it.
