An ‘absolutely heartbreaking’ disaster documentary which dropped on Netflix today depicts almost everyone’s deepest fear materialising during one tragic evening. Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea became available on the streaming service from today (10th July).
The documentary’s description reveals it features previously unseen footage and testimonies from survivors, chronicling the ultimate fate of the luxury liner Costa Concordia and the catastrophe that followed, promising viewers a truly gripping experience.
When it set sail in 2005, the 290-metre vessel held the title of Italy’s longest ship of its type. Tragically, in 2012, it would go down in history for being at the centre of the most devastating cruise ship disaster since the Titanic.

What should have been an unforgettable holiday for over 3,200 holidaymakers, alongside a crew numbering 1,023, turned into a nightmare scenario for entirely the wrong reasons. Survivors featured in the documentary describe living through every cruise passenger’s most dreaded scenario, reports the Mirror.

The Netflix film documents how the situation deteriorated, capturing the frantic evacuation efforts and examining the captain’s actions. Heartbreakingly, the disaster claimed 32 lives.
While the streaming giant categorises it as a ‘disaster documentary’, it also fits within the true crime documentary bracket, primarily because of how the tragedy concluded. As the title has only recently become available to stream, critical and audience reviews are still relatively sparse.
Nevertheless, a handful of early viewers have already taken to the internet to share their verdicts.
One reviewer declared it “is a true crime disaster documentary. It is extremely well-made and absolutely heartbreaking. From the first-hand accounts of the event to the footage, you’ll feel like you were there.”
They continued: “The people interviewed include many passengers, who speak very honestly about the brutal experience and how it affected them in the years that followed. Also, we hear from crew members, including a chef, a dancer, and the Costa Concordia hotel manager.

“It is more terrifying than most horror movies. Also, it’s impossible not to feel their dread and fear. Both from hearing them describe the events and from what was caught on camera. The fear and horror are palpable.”
Though they did caution: “I would say that you should probably skip this if you have a cruise ship trip planned.”
Another viewer offered their own take: “Until now, the July catalogue of Netflix original documentaries has been busy spotlighting true-crimes involving the worst-reputed next-door neighbours and historical events that shaped and changed nations forever.
