Netflix has offered a first glimpse at an upcoming limited series inspired by the real-life figures at the center of one of the cryptocurrency world’s most dramatic collapses.

Titled The Altruists, the modern-day thriller stars Ozark actress Julia Garner alongside House of Guinness star Anthony Boyle and will arrive on Netflix on November 19.

The series explores the story surrounding cryptocurrency exchange FTX and its collapse in November 2022.

Boyle takes on the role of Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX and cryptocurrency trading firm Alameda Research, while Garner portrays Caroline Ellison, his business partner and girlfriend.

Both real-life figures held leading roles when FTX collapsed. It was also discovered that Alameda had violated rules governing the use of FTX customer funds.

With Garner and Boyle leading the cast, The Altruists turns the events surrounding FTX into a limited-series thriller, offering viewers a dramatized look at the people and circumstances behind the high-profile cryptocurrency downfall.

The series also stars Alex Lawther as the real-life Sam Trabucco, co-CEO of Alameda Research, and Matt Rife as the real Ryan Salame, CEO of FTX Digital Markets.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, to make the announcement, Netflix teased: “Here’s your first look at The Altruists, starring Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle.

“Two hyper-smart idealists race to rebuke the global finance market – then get accused of stealing $8 billion and become Gen Z’s own Bonnie & Clyde… Coming to Netflix 19 November.”

House of Guinness’s Arthur Guinness star Anthony Boyle takes the lead role, with the modern-day thriller worlds away from his previous character’s story, which was set in 1800s Dublin.

Boyle took to Instagram to share a photo of himself as Bankman-Fried, with a clean-shaven face and curly hair.

“I’ll watch this for that hair alone. I hope this is all about your hair,” one fan joked. “There’s something different about you…,” another added.

“It is kinda weird to see him in something that is not a period drama actually,” a third noted.

Heated Rivalry actor Hudson Williams will also star as Duncan Rheingans-Yoo and fans flocked to the comments to express their excitement over his role.

“I’m so sat for this! Can’t wait to see Hudson in it,” one fan said, while another added: “We will be watching for Hudson Williams.”

FTX was founded in 2019 and became one of the biggest and most well-known cryptocurrency exchanges in the world.

Yet only three years later, the company collapsed, with billions of dollars in customer funds reportedly missing.

Both Bankman-Fried and Ellison were eventually convicted on various counts of wire and securities fraud, as well as money laundering.
