Netflix viewers searching for a psychological thriller capable of keeping them guessing until the final minutes are being pointed toward a six-part miniseries that fans still describe as “unpredictable,” “memorable” and completely “mind-bending.”
Originally released in 2021, Behind Her Eyes has returned to the conversation after TV reviewer Luke Ecclestone, known online as Eccy Reviews, recommended it alongside two other mysterious supernatural dramas.
But while The 7 Lives of Lea and Midnight Mass also earned places on his list, it was Behind Her Eyes that received the strongest endorsement.
“The last one on this list is absolutely mind bending,” he said, adding that everyone he knows who has watched it “absolutely loves it.”
A relationship drama that becomes something very different
Based on Sarah Pinborough’s 2017 novel, Behind Her Eyes begins with a premise that sounds deceptively straightforward.
Single mother Louise becomes romantically involved with her new boss, David. Complications quickly multiply when Louise unexpectedly forms a friendship with David’s wife, Adele.
Caught between husband and wife, Louise becomes increasingly entangled in their troubled marriage while struggling to determine which of them she can actually trust.
Then the story begins moving into far stranger territory.
Adele attempts to help Louise with her night terrors, introducing a supernatural dimension that gradually transforms what initially appears to be a relationship-driven psychological thriller.
Ecclestone admitted the direction of the story caught him completely off guard.
“Where this show went I never predicted in a million years,” he said, calling it one of the most memorable series he has watched.
Viewers say the ending caught them completely off guard
The recommendation quickly prompted reactions from viewers who had already experienced the six-episode thriller.
One called Behind Her Eyes “absolutely amazing” and gave it a “10/10,” admitting they never expected the ending. Another simply described the series as “fantastic.”
That unpredictability has become one of the show’s defining characteristics. Rather than revealing its full intentions early, the miniseries gradually changes the viewer’s understanding of what kind of story they are actually watching.
For anyone approaching it for the first time, knowing as little as possible may therefore be part of the appeal.
Critics were more divided over its biggest gamble
The series also attracted praise from critics for its complicated structure and relentless twists.
Silvina Lamazares described it as “a well-structured, complex, attractive story,” while Anne Brodie highlighted the “whiplash twists and turns” surrounding its central trio.
Not everyone was convinced by the direction it ultimately takes, however.
Critic Gayle Sequeira argued that the series becomes so committed to reaching its “bonkers twist” that storytelling is sacrificed for shock value.
And that disagreement perhaps explains why Behind Her Eyes continues to generate conversation years after its release.
Whether viewers consider its final turn ingenious or completely outrageous, the series certainly doesn’t play things safe. For thriller fans looking for a short Netflix binge that refuses to reveal where it is heading, its six episodes offer exactly that kind of experience.
