BBC’s Award-Winning Eight-Part Crime Thriller McMafia Is Available to Stream for Free – And It’s Perfect for Your Next Binge-Watch

If This City Is Ours has reignited your appetite for gripping British crime dramas, there’s another acclaimed BBC thriller worth adding to your watchlist.

Starring Happy Valley actor James Norton, McMafia takes viewers deep into the dangerous world of international organized crime, where family loyalty, financial corruption and ruthless power struggles collide.

The eight-part series won an International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series and is currently available to stream for free in the UK on BBC iPlayer.

With its glamorous international settings and tense storytelling, it’s an ideal choice for viewers who enjoy dramas such as The Night Manager and The Godfather.

What Is McMafia About?

Inspired by Misha Glenny’s bestselling nonfiction book, McMafia follows Alex Godman (James Norton), a successful London investment manager determined to escape his family’s criminal history.

The British-raised son of Russian mafia exiles, Alex has worked hard to establish a respectable career and build a future with his girlfriend, Rebecca Harper.

But when a murder brings his family’s dangerous connections back into focus, the life he has carefully constructed begins to unravel.

Suddenly, Alex finds himself navigating an international network of criminals, corrupt businessmen and powerful figures willing to do almost anything to protect their interests.

As he becomes increasingly entangled in the underworld, his determination to safeguard his family threatens to push him toward the very life he has spent years avoiding.

Moving between London, Prague, Mumbai and other international locations, the series explores how organized crime operates across borders and infiltrates seemingly legitimate businesses.

James Norton Leads an Impressive International Cast

Norton delivers a compelling central performance as Alex, a man whose respectable public identity comes under increasing pressure.

He is joined by Juliet Rylance (Perry Mason) as Rebecca Harper, while Game of Thrones actress Faye Marsay plays his sister, Katya.

The supporting cast includes David Strathairn (Nomadland) as businessman Semiyon Kleiman, Merab Ninidze (The Courier) as crime boss Vadim Kalyagin and Aleksey Serebryakov as Alex’s father, Dmitri Godman.

Together, the ensemble brings depth to a story in which almost every relationship is shaped by ambition, suspicion or divided loyalties.

Why McMafia Is Worth Watching

Unlike traditional detective dramas built around solving individual murders, McMafia examines the broader machinery of international organized crime.

Its combination of financial intrigue, family conflict and escalating danger creates a sophisticated thriller that gradually draws its central character into increasingly difficult situations.

The series also benefits from striking cinematography and a globe-spanning storyline that gives its criminal world an unusually expansive scale.

Its critical recognition culminated in an International Emmy win, cementing its reputation as one of the BBC’s notable crime dramas.

Where to Watch McMafia for Free

All eight episodes of McMafia are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK, allowing viewers to watch the complete story without an additional streaming subscription, subject to the usual BBC viewing requirements.

The drama is also listed on Channel 4’s streaming platform and U, with advertising.

For anyone searching for a complete, suspenseful British crime series to watch between episodes of This City Is Ours, McMafia offers an absorbing journey into a world where escaping the family business is far easier said than done.
