A medical drama has been hailed “the best series out there” and is a must-watch for Call the Midwife fans.
Fans of Call the Midwife are urged to watch a period medical drama following staff at a fictionalised version of a real-life hospital during the early 1900s.
The series, which first aired in 2014, follows Dr John W Thackery (played by Clive Owen) and staff at the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York City.
Viewers learn of the limitations faced by surgeons and nurses, with Dr John Thackery partially based on the real historical figure William Stewart Halsted.

As the new leader of the surgery staff, he is forced to battle his own addictions as well as maintain his reputation as a pioneer in medicine.
The series is also set amid a racially charged city where a Harvard-educated Black American surgeon must fight for respect among the all-white hospital staff
The Knick ran for two seasons
The Knick, which ran for two seasons, is the series in question and it is available to stream on HBO Max.
Fans took to IMDb reviews to share their thoughts, with one hailing the show an “absolute masterpiece”, adding: “The caster for this show deserves an applause for hiring Clive Owen as Dr Thackery. Mr Owen is THE only man who can play that role in its two outer ends, a clever doctor and a cocaine addict, switching between these ends sometimes in one single scene!”
Another fan said: “It’s the best series out there!! You must watch it. Right after the first episode I was sold. In two days time I finished the whole first season and I’m already looking forward to the next one. The series is a mix of medicine, biology a VERY-good story and history all-in-one, you going to like it.”
A third commented when the show first aired: “Can’t get enough! It is extraordinary in so many ways and I am restlessly awaiting the start of Season 2.

The period medical drama has been hailed a masterpiece

In March 2017, the series was officially cancelled by Cinemax, with fans begging for it to be picked up elsewhere.
In an exciting turn of events, in 2020, director Steven Soderbergh confirmed a new season was in development and a pilot episode had been written.
In 2023, creator and writer Begler confirmed a spin-off series was still in development, with the pilot set in 1919 Harlem.
The real Knickerbocker Hospital in New York City was founded in 1862 and served as a temporary American Civil War tent facility. The facility later became known for serving primarily poor and immigrant patients.
Dr John Thackery is based in part on Dr William Stewart Halsted, a well-known physician who invented many new surgical instruments and techniques in the early 20th century and was known to be addicted to cocaine and morphine, like Thackery.
