Only Connect’s ‘Genius-Level’ County Puzzle Leaves Both Teams Completely Stumped — Can You Crack the Hidden Pattern They Couldn’t See?
Three English counties. Three numbers. One missing clue.
It looked simple enough, but an Only Connect puzzle left contestants scrambling for explanations — and even the team that eventually supplied an acceptable final answer couldn’t identify the real connection.
The sequence shown to the players was:
3 in Cambridgeshire
2 in Staffordshire
1 in Hertfordshire
?
There were no extra hints.
Contestants had to discover what those numbers represented and work out a valid final line.
Before reading further, see if you can spot the connection.
The Stitchers couldn’t find a way in
The puzzle was given to the Stitchers during a 2023 episode.
Almost immediately, the possibilities began piling up.
Could the numbers represent universities?
Military bases?
Some obscure geographical feature?
The problem was that dozens of things could potentially be counted inside an English county, and nothing in the three clues immediately revealed which category mattered.
With time running out, the Stitchers eventually committed to:
0 in Buckinghamshire
But it wasn’t accepted.
Their chance was gone, and the puzzle passed across to their opponents, the Gunners.
The opposing team found an acceptable answer
The Gunners offered:
0 in Rutland
This time, host Victoria Coren Mitchell accepted it.
She explained that 0 in Dorset would also have been a valid response.
That solved the missing fourth clue.
But there was still a problem.
The Gunners hadn’t actually cracked the connection either.
They believed the numbers represented the number of cathedrals in each county.
That explanation was wrong.
Somehow, they had landed on a valid final answer without identifying the pattern behind it.
The real connection was hiding in plain sight
The sequence was actually based on English counties by number of cities.
Cambridgeshire has three cities represented by the puzzle:
Cambridge, Ely and Peterborough.
Staffordshire has two:
Stoke-on-Trent and Lichfield.
Hertfordshire has one:
St Albans.
The final clue therefore needed a county with zero cities.
That made the Gunners’ answer of Rutland acceptable, while Dorset would also have worked.
So the sequence becomes:
3 in Cambridgeshire
2 in Staffordshire
1 in Hertfordshire
0 in Rutland
Why this puzzle is so difficult
Nothing about the words “Cambridgeshire,” “Staffordshire” and “Hertfordshire” immediately tells players to start counting cities.
That’s the trap.
Once you know the connection, the descending 3-2-1-0 structure looks obvious.
Without that knowledge, however, almost anything associated with counties becomes a possible explanation.
Universities, cathedrals, towns, military bases and countless other geographical features can send the brain down completely different paths.
The Gunners demonstrated exactly how deceptive it was: they produced an acceptable answer while still misunderstanding why it was correct.
And that’s the kind of puzzle that makes Only Connect so unforgiving.
The final clue wasn’t particularly difficult to name.
The real challenge was discovering exactly what you were supposed to be counting.
