The 1% Club’s ‘Simple’ House Puzzle Leaves Players Scrambling — With 10 Contestants Using Their Pass Before the Surprisingly Easy Rule Is Revealed

A few houses, some numbers and one missing answer.

It looked like the sort of puzzle that should take only seconds to solve, but a deceptively simple challenge on The 1% Club left contestants scrambling as the clock counted down.

The 20% question asked players to identify the relationship between numbers positioned around a series of houses.

Some viewers guessed 17. Others thought the answer might be 23.

Inside the studio, the pressure was even greater.

Ten contestants decided not to risk an answer at all and used their free pass to survive the round.

Yet once the hidden rule was explained, the solution suddenly looked much simpler.

One missing number caused plenty of trouble

Hosted by Lee Mack, The 1% Club tests contestants on logic and reasoning rather than relying primarily on traditional general knowledge.

One hundred contestants begin the game, with questions becoming progressively more difficult according to how successfully members of the British public answered them beforehand.

This particular challenge had reached the 20% stage.

Players were shown a collection of houses containing numbers in their windows, roofs and doors.

One number was missing.

Their task was to determine which number belonged in the empty space before time expired.

The arrangement immediately suggested there must be a mathematical relationship between the different parts of each house.

Finding it quickly was another matter.

Viewers started producing very different answers

The puzzle proved equally troublesome for people watching at home.

Several tried different calculations and ended up with answers including 17 and 23.

Others eventually discovered the pattern, although not necessarily before the contestants’ clock would have reached zero.

One viewer, Mark, admitted the question had forced him to use his imaginary pass despite normally enjoying maths challenges.

“I had to use my pass there, and I normally love maths questions,” he said.

Mariposa had the same problem with the countdown, admitting: “I just couldn’t do it in the time.”

Thomas managed to crack the puzzle, but only during the final 10 seconds.

Neil described the night’s questions as “ridiculously hard,” while Ronan admitted: “I wasn’t even close, I was never getting that one.”

Ten contestants refused to gamble

The difficulty wasn’t limited to viewers.

A handful of contestants were eliminated after failing to solve the puzzle correctly.

Another 10 decided the safest option was to use their free pass.

That meant a question whose underlying arithmetic was relatively straightforward managed to put a significant number of players under pressure.

The real challenge wasn’t complicated mathematics.

It was recognizing which numbers needed to be combined — and in what order — before the clock ran out.

The missing number was 12

The correct answer was 12.

The rule connecting the houses was simple once identified:

Add the numbers in the windows, then subtract the number on the roof.

The result is the number that belongs in the door.

Applying that same rule to the final house produces 12.

It was the kind of solution that could feel obvious after the explanation, yet considerably harder when contestants were staring at several numbers while precious seconds disappeared.

And that is exactly where The 1% Club can be so unforgiving.

Knowing how to add and subtract wasn’t enough.

Players first had to work out what the puzzle wanted them to do — and 10 contestants decided they weren’t confident enough to risk their place in the game.
