At first, this 1% Club puzzle looks almost too easy to fail.

There are just a handful of numbers arranged in a pyramid, with one space left blank. No complicated equations. No confusing symbols. Nothing that appears to require advanced maths.

But there’s a catch.

The puzzle is designed to make you overthink the obvious pattern — and that mysterious 20 at the bottom is enough to throw plenty of people off.

The numbers are:

10 — 8 — 6 — 20

Above them sit:

9 — 7 — ?

Then:

8 — 10

And finally:

9

Your challenge is to work out the missing number.

You have 30 seconds.

And whatever you do, don’t start looking for some elaborate mathematical formula.

THE CLUE IS ALREADY SITTING IN FRONT OF YOU

The 1% Club question leaves contestants losing over 95K - can you get it right?

Look at the first two pairs.

10 and 8 produce 9.

Then 8 and 6 produce 7.

That gives you a pretty strong clue about what is happening from one level of the pyramid to the next.

Now apply the same rule to 6 and 20.

That’s where the missing number appears.

But there’s one final test: your answer must also make the 8, 10 and 9 at the top work.

THE ANSWER IS 13

The rule is simply to calculate the average of each neighbouring pair.

10 + 8 = 18
18 ÷ 2 = 9

Then:

8 + 6 = 14
14 ÷ 2 = 7

So for the missing number:

6 + 20 = 26
26 ÷ 2 = 13

And the rest confirms it:

9 + 7 = 16 → 8

7 + 13 = 20 → 10

8 + 10 = 18 → 9

So the missing number is:

13

What makes the puzzle tricky isn’t the maths. It’s the temptation to assume that the unusual 20 must mean the puzzle requires a more complicated solution.

Sometimes, the simplest pattern really is the one hiding in plain sight.
