The ITV game show, hosted by Lee Mack, sees 100 contestants take on a series of increasingly difficult questions, with the ultimate goal of reaching the 1% question. Those who answer it correctly can compete for a share of a prize pot that can reach £100,000.

During the episode, contestant Emma made it through to the final alongside four other players, with £97,000 up for grabs.

The final challenge asked contestants to carefully examine a short paragraph and work out how many times the name of a number appeared.

“Everyone! Pay attention and listen up. Focus in these frightening and lonely thirty seconds. In this whole paragraph, how many times in total is the name of a number written down?”

The official answer was seven.

Four finalists, including Emma, got it right and each walked away with £24,250.

But while the contestants managed to crack the question, some viewers watching at home were far from convinced.

Several viewers pointed out that the word “second” appears in the phrase “thirty seconds” and questioned whether it should also count as an ordinal number. If it did, they argued, the answer could potentially be eight rather than seven.

Others admitted they had initially struggled with the question, while some viewers had the opposite reaction and described it as one of the easiest 1% questions they had seen.

One viewer explained their calculation by identifying the hidden numbers within the paragraph, while another said they had spotted a different number hidden within the word “frightening” and still arrived at seven.

Despite the debate online, the four finalists who answered seven were accepted as correct and shared the £97,000 prize.

The moment once again demonstrated what makes The 1% Club so challenging: sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing the answer — it’s figuring out exactly what the question is asking you to count.
