What began as a long-awaited announcement quickly turned into one of the biggest talking points in music as the legendary Beatle revealed a project shaped by reflection, memory, and experiences that have never been shared this openly before. After years of waiting, fans aren’t just anticipating new songs—they’re preparing for what many believe could be Paul McCartney’s most intimate and heartfelt musical statement in decades.

The former Beatle announced that he will release a new solo album,” The Boys of Dungeon Lane,” on May 29, marking his first solo project in more than five years.

The album, his 18th, leans heavily on memory – particularly his childhood in Liverpool – and is being described as his most personal work to date.

A new single, “Days We Left Behind,” released alongside the announcement Thursday, March 26,, offers an early glimpse of that reflective tone.

“This is very much a memory song for me. The album title, ‘The Boys of Dungeon Lane,’ comes from a lyric in this track,” McCartney said in a statement. “I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else?”

He added, “It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool… We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.”

The album’s title references a street near McCartney’s childhood home in Speke, a working-class area of Liverpool. The songs revisit the years before global fame, including his early friendship with John Lennon and George Harrison,  focusing on the everyday moments that preceded Beatlemania.

The project began about five years ago after McCartney met producer Andrew Watt. During a casual session, he stumbled on a chord progression that became “As You Lie There,” the album’s opening track. Recording unfolded gradually in Los Angeles and Sussex, England, often between tour dates.

The release arrives amid a broader period of retrospection for McCartney. He has recently participated in projects revisiting his past, including a Wings documentary, “Man on the Run,” and work connected to Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles films.

McCartney is also set to return to the stage with two intimate shows March 27 and 28 at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, his first performances since wrapping his “Got Back” tour in 2025.
