Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean Surprise Fans by Taking Over the White House Briefing Room Ahead of Washington Tour Stop
Country stars Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean are used to commanding massive stages, but on Thursday, the pair found themselves in a very different setting: the White House briefing room in Washington, D.C.
The singers were in the nation’s capital ahead of their Double Down Tour performance at Nationals Park. During their White House visit, Aldean stepped aside and allowed Bryan to take a turn behind the famous briefing-room podium, setting up a playful exchange that quickly drew laughs from those watching.
Video of the moment was later shared on social media by President Donald Trump’s team, which joked that Bryan had heard there was “an opening” for White House press secretary, tagging current press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Bryan enthusiastically played along.
Standing behind the podium normally reserved for official White House briefings, the country singer was asked about an agricultural issue involving the spread of the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly capable of causing serious problems for livestock.
“I think the screwworms are screwed,” Bryan replied, drawing laughter with the pun.
He then spoke about efforts involving sterile male flies to help control the pest before turning toward a woman nearby who was applauding.
“See! I’ve been listening to our conversations!” Bryan joked.
The unexpected briefing-room appearance came as Bryan and Aldean prepared to perform together in Washington. During the visit, Bryan was also reported to have met with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and spent time with Vice President JD Vance.
The podium joke attracted additional attention because it came as the White House prepares for a change in its press secretary position. Trump previously announced that Leavitt would leave the role at the end of August to spend more time with her young children and family.
Trump has praised Leavitt as one of his most trusted aides. She recently returned to work after welcoming her second child and is expected to remain a close adviser to the president after stepping away from the press secretary role.
At 27, Leavitt became the youngest person ever to serve as White House press secretary.
“I think the screwworms are screwed,” Bryan quipped.
He then continued with a surprisingly serious-sounding explanation about the use of sterile male flies to help control the pest before pointing toward a woman nearby who applauded his answer.
For Bryan, the lighthearted White House moment was also notable because he has generally been cautious about publicly entering political debates.
In 2022, the singer faced controversy after inviting then-Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis onto the stage during an event raising money for people affected by Hurricane Ian. Bryan later explained that he normally tries to stay away from politics and said DeSantis’ appearance was primarily about helping communities dealing with the aftermath of the storm.
Bryan has also spoken about being careful with public comments in an era when remarks can spread rapidly online without their original context.
Aldean, meanwhile, has been more public about his political views. He has previously expressed support for Trump and attended the 2024 Republican National Convention with his wife, Brittany Aldean.
Thursday’s briefing-room appearance, however, appeared to be less about delivering a political message and more about having some fun before the two country stars took the stage in Washington.
For a few minutes, Bryan traded the concert microphone for one of America’s most recognizable podiums. And instead of delivering a country hit to thousands of fans, he tried out a very different role — complete with his own White House-style answer and a punchline that had the room laughing.
