Kelly Ripa has opened up about the dental procedure that kept her away from Live with Kelly and Mark for nearly two weeks, revealing that a habit she thought was good for her health ultimately contributed to the problem.
The 55-year-old TV host discussed the experience on the Aug. 12 episode of her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, which was recorded before she underwent the procedure. Speaking with Survival of the Thickest creator and star Michelle Buteau, Ripa explained that she needed gum graft surgery because she had developed gum recession.
The reason, she admitted, was surprisingly simple: she had been brushing her teeth too aggressively and too often.

During the conversation, Buteau remarked that the procedure sounded painful. Ripa agreed, then explained that her recovery would require her to remain silent for 10 days.
She also described the procedure itself, explaining that tissue from the roof of her mouth would be grafted onto the affected area of her gums.
When Buteau asked why Ripa needed the surgery, the Live co-host offered a candid explanation.
“I’m an over-brusher,” she said, acknowledging that her habit of brushing her teeth excessively had contributed to recession in a specific area of her gums.
“It’s a good-bad habit,” Ripa explained.
Gum graft surgery is commonly used to treat receding or thinning gums by placing healthy tissue over exposed tooth roots. The procedure can help protect the affected area and reduce tooth sensitivity.
Ripa admits she delayed the procedure for five years

Ripa also revealed that the surgery was not something she had suddenly been advised to undergo.
In fact, she had already been supposed to have the procedure five years earlier.
“Before you praise me, I was supposed to do it five years ago,” Ripa told Buteau.
According to Ripa, her doctor eventually made it clear that she could no longer postpone it, telling her that she did not have “the luxury of time.”
The recovery restrictions also became a source of concern for the longtime television host. Knowing that she would be unable to speak for 10 days, Ripa joked about how difficult the silence would be for her and acknowledged that they were already trying to manage her stress over not being able to talk.
The surgery forced Ripa to step away from Live
The procedure eventually kept Ripa away from Live with Kelly and Mark for about two weeks.
Her absence began with the July 27 episode, when husband and co-host Mark Consuelos explained to viewers that she was recovering from dental surgery and had been instructed by her doctor not to speak while she healed.
Consuelos later described the procedure as painful and said he was trying to make sure Ripa followed her doctor’s instructions during recovery.
Those instructions included eating soft foods, avoiding straws and resisting the temptation to check the surgical area.
Consuelos said that while Ripa is famously comfortable with dental procedures and typically does not use Novocaine, this particular surgery was painful enough that he knew it was serious.
Guest hosts stepped in during Ripa’s recovery
With Ripa temporarily unable to host, Live with Kelly and Mark brought in a series of guest co-hosts to appear alongside Consuelos.
Among them were Buteau and Kevin Jonas, as well as Mila Kunis, Pamela Adlon, Scott Foley, Sarah Chalke, Jenna Dewan and Carrie Coon.
Buteau, who was among the guest hosts during Ripa’s recovery, also spoke with her about the procedure on the podcast.
For Ripa, the experience offered an unusually candid glimpse into a health issue that had a direct impact on her television schedule — while also revealing that the problem stemmed from a habit she had long considered a positive one.
