A Jeopardy! clue has divided fans over a disputed part of international waters.

On the July 2 episode of the beloved quiz show, Jeopardy! contestant Andy Briseño chose a clue in the “Bodies of Water” category. The clue? “Galveston Bay is an inlet of this much larger inlet of the Atlantic Ocean.”

“What is the Gulf of Mexico?” Briseño offered, and host Ken Jennings replied, “Gulf of Mexico is correct.”

The answer wouldn’t have been considered contentious until recently: On Jan. 20, 2025, during his first day back in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring that the inlet, long known around the world as the Gulf of Mexico, be renamed the Gulf of America.

While the body of water’s name has since changed to Trump’s preference on American maps, his executive order has been met with significant pushback both within and beyond the U.S.

One day after his order, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters that she and her country strongly rejected Trump’s authority to rename the gulf, formally or otherwise.

“He says that he will call it the ‘Gulf of America’ on its continental shelf,” Sheinbaum said on Jan. 21, 2025. “For us it is still the Gulf of Mexico and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico.”

Still, some entities have formally recognized Trump’s change for the gulf — most notably, Google Maps. In a post on X, Google explained that its compliance with Trump’s executive order is in line with its “longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.”

Jeopardy!‘s move to accept “Gulf of Mexico” as a correct answer for the clue divided fans — both those who agree and disagree with the choice. “Gulf of Mexico” is what adults learned in school and what is accepted everywhere beyond the United States; but while the preference toward the old name widely prevails even inside the U.S., some believed the executive order impacts the fact of the situation and should therefore be reflected on Jeopardy!.

Several users online questioned whether both “Gulf of Mexico” and “Gulf of America” would have been acceptable answers.

In the past, Trump has taken a hard stance against those who haven’t complied with his executive order. In February 2025, Trump banned The Associated Press — the respected outlet known for its unbiased and reliable reporting — from the Oval Office after it refused to alter uses of “Gulf of Mexico” in its coverage.
