During a heated discussion on The View, the former W,hit,e H,ouse official warned Republ!cans that supporting the U.S. President’s SAVE Act could carry unexpected political consequences, sparking a lively debate around the table.

Alyssa Farah Griffin has been making all sorts of predictions on The View lately, and Friday’s (July 24) show was no exception.

During the episode, the cohosts started with a segment about Donald Trump‘s furious push for the Senate to adopt the “SAVE Act,” a voting reform bill passed by the House of Representatives that would require voters to present enhanced identification at polls beyond a traditional driver’s license or state ID (like a passport, a birth certificate, or a naturalization certificate in addition to photo ID).

In the chat, Griffin warned that Trump’s desire for this could backfire if the measure is passed and signed into law.

“I oppose the SAVE Act. I think it would be overly cumbersome for people to vote,” she said, citing the fact that she herself does not have a driver’s license. After some ribbing by cohost Sunny Hostin and agreeing that she is a “passenger princess,” Griffin continued her thought: “Because I think the right to vote is sacrosanct, I think that civic engagement is something you need to show up for. I would support, however, making it free to obtain an identification card because there are Americans that it could cost them too much, and making it a federal holiday so that people can get off work and show up to vote. It’s a bad thing when only 65% of our country shows up to vote. I’m all for more people voting. But here’s a fun fact: I have a feeling that if the SAVE America Act passed, which it’s not going to, it would actually disenfranchise more Republicans. Rural voters are more likely not to have a passport. Most have not traveled outside of the country. This is just bad policy.”

Hostin, however, pointed out that it could have deleterious effects on Black voters across the country, saying, “I believe that it will disproportionately affect African American voters. I believe that in my soul. And African Americans fought and died for the right to vote in this country. I think it’s a very slippery slope. If you know history, it reminds me of having to count jelly beans in a jar. It reminds me of having to answer citizenship questions for Black people.”
