The Tragic Death Of HeeHaw: Georgia Officer Shoots Beloved Baby Donkey During Missing-Girl Search As Drone Camera Captures The Encounter

A desperate search for a missing 12-year-old girl ended with a heartbreaking and deeply controversial death when a Georgia police officer shot and killed a beloved one-year-old miniature donkey named HeeHaw.

The shooting happened in the early hours of August 30 at Elsberry Riding and Farm in Rockmart, Georgia, as officers and K-9 teams searched the area for the missing child. The girl had reportedly been missing for around two hours when police began following a trail through wooded areas and into a pasture.

What happened next has produced two very different accounts — and the investigation is now under way.

The Search That Led Officers Into The Pasture

Cedartown police were called to assist with the search on August 29. Officers worked alongside a Polk County K-9 handler and a Haralson County bloodhound team as they followed footprints and other signs believed to be connected to the missing girl.

The Rockmart Fire Department also joined the operation, using a drone to search the area from above.

According to Officer Trenton Garner’s incident report, the search team was moving along a fence line when several horses in the pasture became frightened and ran away.

Then the team spotted HeeHaw.

Garner wrote that the donkey was on the side of a hill before suddenly moving toward the search team.

The Haralson County bloodhound team reportedly retreated as HeeHaw approached. A Polk County K-9 handler then used a Taser in an attempt to deter the animal.

According to Garner’s account, the attempt did not work.

The officer then drew his department-issued Glock 17 and fired a single shot.

HeeHaw was hit.

The donkey reportedly turned and ran uphill before collapsing. Garner told dispatchers he believed he had fired because he feared the animal could injure the K-9 handler or members of the search team.

But HeeHaw’s Owner Tells A Very Different Story

For Hannah Israel and the family who raised HeeHaw, the incident looks completely different.

Israel has described HeeHaw as a bottle-raised donkey who was deeply integrated into the family. She told police that he was worth approximately $6,000 and had never displayed aggressive behavior toward people or attempted to bite anyone.

She also strongly disputes the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Israel says HeeHaw was friendly and accustomed to people, including through appearances at petting zoos. She has described him as a member of the family and has demanded answers about why the animal was shot.

The disagreement over HeeHaw’s behavior has become one of the central questions surrounding the case.

Was the donkey genuinely moving toward the officers in a way that created an immediate danger?

Or was HeeHaw simply reacting to unfamiliar people entering his pasture in the middle of the night?

Those questions have not been finally answered.

The Drone Camera Could Become A Crucial Piece Of Evidence

Perhaps the most striking detail surrounding the case is that the encounter was reportedly witnessed through a drone camera.

Rockmart firefighters were operating the drone during the search, and according to the police report, they told officers they witnessed the encounter through the drone’s camera.

That has only intensified public interest in what happened.

However, the footage has not been publicly released. Requests for the video have reportedly been denied while the investigation remains ongoing, and community members are now calling for authorities to release body-camera and drone footage.

That means the footage should not yet be presented as proof that either side’s account is correct.

Instead, it could potentially provide investigators with another record of the moments leading up to the shooting.

The Missing Girl Was Eventually Found Safe

Amid the controversy, it is important to remember why officers were in the area in the first place.

The search was for a 12-year-old girl who had been missing from her home for approximately two hours.

She was eventually located safely farther down Grady Road, in the same general direction the bloodhound team had been tracking before encountering HeeHaw.

The successful search, however, ended with an animal’s death that has since triggered widespread public attention.

The Officer Has Been Placed On Leave

Garner has been placed on administrative leave while the circumstances surrounding HeeHaw’s death are investigated.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Law Enforcement Division is conducting an outside investigation, and officials have said the case will be investigated thoroughly and impartially. No charges have been reported against Garner at this stage.

That investigation will ultimately have to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the officer’s account, the behavior of the animal, and any available video or other evidence.

A Family Left Asking Why

For HeeHaw’s family, the investigation cannot change what has already happened.

A donkey they raised from a young age is gone.

Israel has publicly spoken about the emotional impact of losing him and has sought accountability while also asking people not to threaten or harass the officers or others involved.

The controversy has continued to grow, with supporters demanding transparency and answers about what happened inside the pasture that night. A planned protest has also been announced calling for accountability and the release of available footage.
