Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to return to Britain with their children could mark one of the most dramatic turns in their post-royal lives.

Six years after leaving the UK for California, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly preparing to spend an extended period back in Britain, with Archie and Lilibet expected to attend a British school.

But this is not a return to royal duties.

The couple are expected to remain private, non-working members of the Royal Family while establishing a home outside London. They are also reportedly keeping their Montecito mansion, meaning the move appears to be less of a permanent farewell to America and more of an unexpected second chapter.

And that raises an obvious question: what happened to the extraordinary American future Harry and Meghan once appeared to have planned?

When the couple moved to California in 2020, the possibilities seemed almost limitless.

They arrived with global fame, royal titles and enormous public interest. Soon came reported multimillion-dollar agreements with Netflix and Spotify, alongside plans for documentaries, podcasts, television projects and other entertainment ventures through Archewell Productions.

At first, the strategy appeared to work.

Their Oprah Winfrey interview became a global television event. Their Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan generated enormous attention, while Harry’s memoir Spare became a major publishing success.

But once the Sussexes stopped talking primarily about the Royal Family, the response became much harder to predict.

Projects such as Live to Lead, Heart of Invictus and Polo failed to generate the same cultural impact as their earliest releases. Netflix’s Pearl was scrapped, while the planned adaptation of Meet Me at the Lake never materialised during their original deal.

The Spotify chapter was even more bruising.

Meghan’s Archetypes podcast ran for one season before Spotify and Archewell Audio announced in 2023 that they had mutually agreed to part ways. The split was followed by harsh public criticism from Spotify executive Bill Simmons, adding another uncomfortable moment to the Sussexes’ Hollywood story.

Meghan then attempted another reinvention.

Her lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard was launched with considerable anticipation before being replaced by the shorter As Ever. The business has released lifestyle products and secured attention, but it has yet to become the huge commercial empire some observers once predicted.

Her Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan also lasted two seasons without a third-season renewal.

Even their entertainment ventures have recently faced unexpected scrutiny, including the reported performance of Cookie Queens in cinemas.

None of this means Harry and Meghan have disappeared from American popular culture. Far from it.

They remain globally recognised figures, and virtually every new project still generates headlines.

But fame and commercial success are not necessarily the same thing.

That distinction makes their reported British return particularly intriguing.

King Charles is said to have been informed of the plans, although the arrangements surrounding Harry and Meghan’s royal status are reportedly unchanged. The couple are not expected to return as working royals or resume official duties.

For Harry, however, the move could have a deeply personal dimension.

He has previously spoken about missing aspects of life in Britain, and his recent reunion with his father reportedly left him feeling optimistic about spending more time in the UK with his family.

Archie and Lilibet attending school in Britain could also give the children a much stronger connection to their father’s home country.

Yet the Sussexes’ decision to retain their California property adds an intriguing twist.

They are not completely abandoning the American dream.

Instead, they appear to be creating a life that stretches across both sides of the Atlantic.

And that may be the most revealing part of all.

Harry and Meghan once left Britain convinced that their future belonged in California.

Now, six years later, they are reportedly preparing to bring their children back to the country they left behind — while keeping one foot firmly in America.

Whether the move becomes permanent remains unknown.

But one thing is clear: the Sussexes’ next chapter may look very different from the Hollywood empire they once imagined.
