For most wedding guests, a maid of honor speech is expected to bring a few laughs and a few tears. But at Caroline Coady Powell’s July 2026 wedding, her lifelong best friend, Anna Cooper, surprised everyone by pressing play on a voice memo Powell had recorded nearly three years earlier — just hours after meeting the man she would eventually marry.

The recording captured the excitement of a woman telling her best friend about someone she had just met, long before anyone knew where the story would lead. By the time the clip ended, it had transformed an already heartfelt speech into a full-circle moment that celebrated both a marriage and a friendship that had lasted more than two decades.

“Hearing it again felt incredibly sweet and surreal,” Powell, 26, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I’m so grateful to have that moment preserved, and even more grateful that Anna trusted her intuition to include it in her speech.”

Cooper and Powell’s friendship began in 2004, when the Cooper family moved two houses down from the Coady family in Nashville. The two, who are just one year apart in age, grew up alongside one another as their parents became close friends and their older siblings formed friendships of their own.

Over the years, long voice memos, which Cooper compares to the length of “podcast episodes,” became their preferred way of staying connected, often stretching into several minutes at a time. One of those recordings arrived in the early hours of Sept. 17, 2023, after Powell attended a wedding where she met her future husband, Colton Powell.

Although she already knew of the Powell family through a mutual friend, Colton had been away attending law school in Malibu and almost didn’t attend the wedding. Looking back, Caroline still marvels at how close they came to missing each other altogether.

“I was a bridesmaid, and we ended up meeting at the rehearsal dinner,” Caroline recalls. “It’s crazy to think that if he hadn’t made that last-minute decision, we may never have met.”

Hours later, after returning home from the celebration, Caroline couldn’t wait to tell Cooper everything.

“I was slaphappy and so giddy, so naturally I sent a seven-minute voice memo to Anna,” she recalls. “I definitely do not remember it being seven minutes long, but not shocked by that at all.”

While Caroline eventually forgot about the recording, Cooper never deleted it. Naturally sentimental, she held onto meaningful messages, and this one immediately stood out.

“In the full seven-minute recording, it was so obvious [Caroline] was completely smitten with Colton,” Cooper, 25, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I already knew who he was, I knew he was a great guy, and I knew they’d met in such an organic way through mutual friends, so I felt like there was real potential there.”

Just weeks after that wedding, Caroline flew to Malibu to visit Colton, and by the end of the trip, they were officially dating. And as their relationship continued to grow, Cooper became increasingly convinced she had witnessed the beginning of something lasting.

Years later, after Caroline asked Cooper to serve as her maid of honor alongside her sister, Ally, who was matron of honor, Cooper began collecting memories and ideas for her speech. Despite originally planning to describe the voice memo herself, Cooper realized hearing Caroline’s own words would make the moment far more meaningful.

“I was really intentional about what I included, and I know Caroline well enough to know she’d love it,” Cooper explains. “I know her family well enough to know they’d love it too, and I knew Colton would love hearing what she had to say about him just 24 hours after they met. If I’d had any doubt that it wasn’t the right thing to do, I never would’ve played it.”

Luckily, the surprise landed exactly as Cooper had hoped. Caroline had “absolutely no idea” the recording still existed until she suddenly heard her own voice filling the reception.

“I literally listened to her say during the speech that she’s thankful she doesn’t have to explain my excitement because she has a long voice memo from me that she condensed to 45 seconds, and it still didn’t register until I heard my voice, and then I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” she shares.

For Cooper, keeping the secret for months made the reveal even more rewarding.

“Seeing the shock on [Caroline’s] face was so special,” she recalls. “It was definitely the biggest secret I’ve ever kept from her.”

The emotional moment quickly resonated beyond the ballroom after a video of the speech went viral, amassing over 20.5 million views on TikTok, with viewers praising both the speech itself and the decades-long friendship behind it.

When asked, Caroline says no amount of online attention compares to what it felt like hearing her younger self unknowingly describe the beginning of her future.

“I sound biased because this was my wedding and she was my maid of honor, but [Cooper’s] speech is the best speech I have ever heard in my life,” Caroline emphasizes. “It was the most well spoken, confident, heartfelt and unique speech, and I don’t think anyone could’ve topped it.”

For Cooper, though, the recording was never about creating a viral moment. It was about telling her best friend’s story in the most authentic way possible.

“Using the voice memo felt like the perfect way to make it specific to their story and let everyone hear Caroline describe those first moments in her own words,” Cooper tells PEOPLE. “Since we’ve been friends for as long as I can remember, it felt especially meaningful to be able to share that part of their story.”
