A routine search for a missing 12-year-old girl in Georgia took a heartbreaking and controversial turn after a police officer fatally shot a 1-year-old donkey named HeeHaw.

Officer Trenton Garner of the Cedartown Police Department was among those involved.

Garner reportedly said the search team was moving along a fence line when several horses became alarmed. He then encountered a young donkey, later identified as HeeHaw, which allegedly approached the officers.

A K-9 handler reportedly attempted to stop the animal with a Taser.

According to Garner’s account, the Taser failed to stop HeeHaw’s approach. Garner then fired his service weapon once.

HeeHaw reportedly ran toward a nearby hill before collapsing.

The officer later notified supervisors and said he believed the shooting was necessary to protect members of the search team.

The missing girl was eventually found safely near a church.

HeeHaw’s Owner Tells A Very Different Story
