King Charles reportedly tried to use his private meeting with Prince Harry as an opportunity to take a much bigger step toward repairing the Royal Family’s most painful rift.
But according to a new account, Prince William wanted no part of it.
Royal commentator Rob Shuter has claimed that Charles hoped the Prince of Wales would join him and Harry at Highgrove during the Duke of Sussex’s July 10 visit, creating the first meaningful face-to-face encounter between the brothers in years.
William allegedly refused.
And the reason attributed to him was strikingly blunt.
“No, it will be a lie.”
Neither Buckingham Palace nor Kensington Palace has confirmed that Charles made the request or that William used those words, meaning the account remains an unverified claim attributed by Shuter to an unnamed source.
Even so, the story has renewed attention on just how difficult any genuine reconciliation between William and Harry may still be.
Charles reportedly hoped Highgrove could become a turning point
Harry’s July 10 meeting with his father at Highgrove was significant on its own.
After years of tension, the private encounter suggested that Charles and his younger son were still capable of spending time together away from the cameras.
According to Shuter, however, the King hoped the visit might achieve something more.
Speaking on Maureen Callahan’s The Nerve podcast, Shuter said Charles “desperately wanted William to come” to Highgrove.
The reported idea was simple but potentially momentous: bring both sons into the same room and begin rebuilding a relationship that has been fractured for years.
William, according to the account, rejected that approach.
Rather than appear alongside Harry and create an image suggesting the family had moved forward, he allegedly believed such a moment would misrepresent the reality of their relationship.
William was reportedly close enough to attend
The claim becomes more notable because Shuter said William was not far from Highgrove at the time.
After examining the royal schedules, he suggested the Prince of Wales could have reached the Gloucestershire residence in approximately 20 minutes.
If accurate, that would make William’s absence appear less like a logistical problem and more like a deliberate decision.
There has been no official confirmation of William’s exact movements or whether he had been formally invited.
But Shuter’s version of events presents the reported refusal as a matter of principle rather than convenience.
William allegedly did not want a public or semi-public gesture of reconciliation to come before the private relationship had actually changed.

According to the commentator, the Prince of Wales is increasingly viewing the situation through the responsibilities he will eventually inherit as monarch.
“William now is not just thinking about himself and personal feelings,” Shuter claimed.
He suggested William is considering how decisions made now could affect the future of the monarchy and eventually the position of his eldest son, Prince George.

“He has two problems. He has his uncle Andrew, and he has his brother,” the commentator said.
