Riley Green Faces His First Tough Decision as ‘The Voice’ Season 30 Battle Rounds Begin
Riley Green did not have to wait long to make one of the toughest calls of his first season as a coach on ‘The Voice’ Season 30.
After the Blind Auditions filled all four teams with 12 artists each, the competition moved into the Battle Round. Green was the first coach to face a difficult matchup, pairing solo singer Brandy Neelly against sister duo Ferryn and Brinkley Wright.
The three artists were asked to perform Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” with country star Carly Pearce joining Team Riley as its celebrity Battle Advisor.

The Battle gave Green three very different strengths to consider.
Ferryn and Brinkley Wright entered the competition as a duo, giving them the natural advantage of performing together and blending their voices. Brandy Neelly, meanwhile, had to hold her own as a solo performer against two singers who already had a close musical connection.
During rehearsals, the artists worked with Pearce as they prepared their version of “Mama’s Broken Heart.” Pearce described the Miranda Lambert song as “quirky” and “weird,” pointing to the unusual character and attitude the performers would need to bring to it.
The song also gave all three artists room to show their personalities rather than simply focusing on vocal power.
Ferryn, Brinkley and Brandy take the stage
When the Battle began, all three singers delivered the energy the song demanded.
Green later praised the performance, saying he was pleased to have played a small creative role in preparing the artists and that he had already sensed the performance would work when he heard them rehearsing acoustically.
But the coach also acknowledged that the decision in front of him was going to be difficult.
Ferryn and Brinkley had one obvious advantage: they were family and had developed extremely tight harmonies by performing together. Their ability to sing as a unit gave them a quality that a solo artist could not easily duplicate.
Brandy, however, had made an impression of her own. Green pointed out that she had even baked him a cake, a detail that added a lighter personal touch to an otherwise tense decision.
Riley Green chooses Ferryn and Brinkley
After considering the performance, Green ultimately selected Ferryn and Brinkley to move forward.
The decision marked Green’s first elimination as a coach, and he openly acknowledged how difficult it was.
He praised Brandy for giving the song everything she had and described her as a talented artist whom he had enjoyed working with. In the end, though, he felt the Wright sisters offered something especially valuable for the competition.
Green highlighted their status as the only duo on the show and the strength of their harmony. Although Ferryn and Brinkley are talented individually, their ability to perform together gives them another dimension as competitors.
That combination convinced Green that the sisters had a strong opportunity to survive the next stage of the competition.
Brandy Neelly is eliminated
With Green’s decision made, Brandy Neelly’s Season 30 journey came to an end.
Her elimination was particularly significant because it came at the very start of the Battle phase, immediately after the Blind Auditions had been completed. Ferryn and Brinkley, meanwhile, became the first artists from Team Riley to advance toward the show’s newly introduced Cut Week.
The choice also illustrated the challenge facing coaches this season. With every team carrying 12 artists, each coach must eventually make difficult cuts as the field is reduced for the Live Shows.
What happens after the Battle Rounds?
Season 30 has introduced Cut Week, which NBC describes as the biggest elimination stage in The Voice history.
Under the new format, each coach will send two artists directly to the Live Shows. Five additional artists will then compete for the final place on that coach’s team. Once the Top 12 is established, viewers will vote for one additional artist, creating a Top 13 for the Live Shows.
The changes make every Battle particularly important because advancing artists are not simply trying to survive the next performance. They are also trying to establish themselves as contenders before the competition reaches its most significant round of eliminations.
For Green, that process has already begun with a difficult choice between Brandy Neelly and Ferryn and Brinkley Wright.
His first decision sent the sister duo forward, while ending Neelly’s run on the show.
Season 30 features Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, Queen Latifah and Riley Green as coaches. The season premiered on September 21, 2026, with the Battle phase following the completion of the Blind Auditions.
The competition now moves ahead with Ferryn and Brinkley carrying Team Riley’s hopes into the next stage, while Green prepares for more difficult decisions as the field continues to shrink.
