Craig Melvin was overcome with emotion during a recent Today show moment as he reflected on his mother Betty Jo Melvin’s powerful journey through breast cancer.

The longtime co-host became emotional after watching a touching video during Jenna Bush Hager’s Morning Boost segment, which featured a grandmother celebrating the end of her cancer treatment by ringing the traditional “bell.”

The moment immediately reminded Craig of his own mother’s milestone.

“Yeah, well, my mom rang the bell,” Melvin shared, referring to Betty Jo completing her breast cancer treatment nearly a year earlier.

The heartfelt admission quickly became an emotional moment on the live broadcast.

A Reminder To Slow Down And Appreciate The Moments

Speaking about the unexpected reaction, Craig admitted that his mother’s journey made him realize he often moves too quickly through life without taking enough time to process important moments.

“I move so fast all the time that sometimes I don’t sit with things as long as I should,” he explained.

Craig said much of his focus had been on making sure his mother received the best care possible and helping her through the difficult period.

His mother’s diagnosis also carried extra weight for the family, especially after Craig lost his brother Lawrence Meadows to colon cancer in 2020.

Betty Jo’s battle included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. At times, the treatments affected her rheumatoid arthritis, causing her to lose the ability to walk or use her hands.

Despite those challenges, she remained determined and refused to let the diagnosis define her.

Betty Jo said her family and friends encouraged her not to give in to fear or self-pity after her diagnosis.

“When we’re feeling down, they remind us we’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves,” she shared.

Although she is now in remission, Betty Jo continues regular screenings and will remain on breast cancer medication for five years.

She described the experience as life-changing, explaining that her perspective completely shifted after receiving the diagnosis.

“Your life could change in a second,” she said. “My life changed from a phone call.”

“The Rock Of Our Family”

Craig praised his mother as one of the strongest people he knows, calling her the “rock of our family.”

He highlighted the obstacles she overcame, including growing up in the projects, becoming the first person in their family to attend college, and surviving difficult experiences earlier in life.

Craig said his mother’s sacrifices shaped everything he has achieved.

“For 50 years, literally 50 years, she has been just an angel among us,” he said, describing her lifelong dedication to giving to others.

For Betty Jo, surviving cancer also brought a new mindset. After years of putting everyone else first, she said she has learned to prioritize her own happiness and peace.

Her journey has become a reminder for the entire family to appreciate every moment and never take time together for granted.
