A series that’s been dubbed ‘one of the best mystery thrillers ever made’ is proving itself to be an instant hit on Netflix.
With an immediate hook in its total memory loss premise, viewers have described Absentia as a ‘phenomenal’ show that had them ‘hooked within ten minutes’.
Originally released on Amazon Prime between 2017 and 2020, Absentia stars Stana Katić as special FBI agent Emily Byrne and the show begins with her being discovered in a cabin in the woods with no memory of how or why she is there.
The show’s IMDb synopsis reads: ‘After being declared dead in absentia, an FBI agent must reclaim her family, identity and innocence when she finds herself the prime suspect in a string of murders.’
Absentia has a particularly impressive rating on IMBd of 7.2 out of 10, despite having a more modest critical score of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show has proven a hit since it was released to Netflix on November 14 and immediately rocketed to sixth place on the UK top ten charts.

Ahead of the release of the first season, Stana opened up about why the show is such a captivating mystery to TV Guide.
The actress said: ‘The question is: who is she, really? This is a character who was gone for six years and has come back but the world has completely gone on. She has no place in this new world.
‘There’s a lot of secrets that have been neatly tucked away that are going to get unearthed through her resurrection.
‘On top of that, she has little recollection of what happened during those six years. We do understand that there is a serious amount of torture, but we don’t understand to what extent.
‘We’ll uncover that as an audience as the story moves forward throughout the 10 episodes. By the time we reach the end, we’ll have a certain amount of resolution to that but it’s the type of resolution that will leave a big fat question mark at the end of the first season.’
