American Idol has officially been renewed for its milestone Season 25, but one big question still hasn’t been answered: Will Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie all return to the judges’ table?
At this point, nothing has been confirmed. Until ABC makes an official announcement, fans shouldn’t assume the current panel is locked in for another season.
The show recently revealed that online auditions for Season 25 will run from August 25 through September 28 as part of Idol Across America. As in previous years, those early auditions will be reviewed by producers rather than the celebrity judges. ABC has also not announced a premiere date yet, although last season debuted in January after the show’s schedule shifted earlier.
Even without official confirmation, there are several reasons to believe the current trio could stay together.
One of the biggest arguments is consistency. While Season 24 posted some of the franchise’s lower ratings, traditional TV numbers have declined across nearly every major reality competition, including The Voice. Success today depends on much more than overnight ratings.
ABC has also found a formula that works for its audience. Unlike The Voice, which frequently changes coaches, American Idol has built stability around its judges. Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie appeal to the show’s core viewers, particularly country music fans and families looking for positive entertainment.
Their judging style also fits the show’s current identity. Rather than creating drama or harsh criticism, the three judges usually encourage contestants and allow the singers to remain the focus. That supportive atmosphere has become one of the defining features of ABC’s version of American Idol.
There is also a business side to the decision. Advertisers know exactly what they’re getting with three well-established stars who have broad appeal, strong public images, and millions of social media followers. Keeping familiar faces can make it easier to maintain long-term partnerships.
Still, there are valid reasons why a change could happen.
Bryan and Richie have now spent nearly a decade on the judging panel. Both joined when American Idol moved to ABC in 2018, meaning they have completed nine seasons, matching Simon Cowell’s run on the original series. Only Randy Jackson served longer.
Underwood appears to be the least likely judge to leave. After replacing Katy Perry, the former American Idol champion has quickly become the emotional heart of the panel. Her unique perspective as a past winner continues to resonate with contestants, and she has generated much of the show’s recent media attention.
Richie, meanwhile, could face a different consideration. At 77 years old, some fans have wondered whether he may eventually decide to step away, although he remains active and continues to connect with both artists and viewers.
For now, however, there are few signs that major changes are coming.
When Katy Perry exited the show, rumors circulated for months before her departure became official. This offseason has been noticeably quiet, with no credible reports suggesting any of the three judges are leaving.
ABC has also continued featuring Bryan and Underwood heavily across the show’s social media channels during the break between seasons, another sign that the current lineup may remain intact.
Until an official announcement arrives, the future of the judging panel remains uncertain. But based on recent activity, industry patterns, and the show’s preference for stability, the safest prediction is that Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie will all return when American Idol Season 25 begins in 2027.
