A 16-year-old lifeguard is being celebrated as a hero after dramatic video captured him risking his own life to save a young boy from powerful surf at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California.
The footage shows the teenager, identified by local media as Ryder, refusing to let go of the child as massive waves crashed over them. Despite the dangerous conditions, Ryder kept a firm grip on the boy while battling the strong current.

As wave after wave rolled in, the young lifeguard could be seen timing each breaker, taking quick breaths before ducking underwater with the child to avoid being swept away.
Several beachgoers rushed into the water in an attempt to help, initially forming a human chain to pull the pair back to shore. However, the rough surf quickly overwhelmed them, forcing the rescue attempt to stop.
A second lifeguard then entered the water and joined Ryder. Together, the two were able to bring the child safely back to the beach.
The dramatic rescue quickly spread across social media, where it drew praise from thousands of viewers, including Eric Trump.
Sharing the video on X, Trump described Ryder’s actions as “truly the best of America.”
“Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honour. Well done,” he wrote.

Witnesses also applauded Ryder’s courage, with many calling it one of the most remarkable rescues they had ever seen.
Ryder’s mother later thanked supporters for their kind messages, saying she had been overwhelmed by the response.

“I am blown away by the love, kindness, gratitude and respect you’re sending his way,” she said, adding that her son was simply doing what he loves.
Scott Vander Dussen, who witnessed the incident, told NBC Bay Area that the ocean conditions changed without warning.
“The waves, I wouldn’t say they were tranquil, but they were what you’d expect, a normal cadence and intensity,” he said.
“And then that just changed in a heartbeat. It caught a lot of people off guard.”

He added that the child was swept into danger almost instantly.
“Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment’s time,” Vander Dussen said. “I’m glad it ended the way it did. I’m certain if the lifeguards weren’t there, he wouldn’t have gone home that night.”
After the rescue, paramedics evaluated the child before reuniting him with his parents. The teenager’s quick thinking and determination have since earned widespread recognition as many continue to praise his bravery.
