The investigation into the death of 18-year-old football player Nolan Wells continues to raise questions as his family searches for answers about what happened during his final hours.
Wells’ best friend, Jayvon Williams, recently spoke out about the case, saying he believes parts of the investigation are being misunderstood and that the situation should not be reduced to a discussion about race.
Speaking with TMZ Live, Jayvon said he was surprised investigators have not contacted him for an interview, despite his close friendship with Nolan and his knowledge of Nolan’s relationships with the people who were with him during the Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island, Mississippi.
Jayvon questioned why authorities have not reached out, saying he believes he may have important information that could help investigators understand what happened before Nolan disappeared.
He also addressed the growing public conversation surrounding race after civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the Wells family, raised concerns about whether Mississippi authorities were handling the case properly.
Crump has called for an independent investigation and autopsy, citing unanswered questions surrounding Nolan’s disappearance and death. He has also questioned whether the case would have been handled differently if the racial circumstances were reversed.
Jayvon, however, said he does not believe labeling the case as a racial issue is the right focus.
“Obviously they’re gonna paint it as that because none of this adds up,” Jayvon said, while explaining that he believes the attention should remain on finding the truth about Nolan’s final moments.
Viral Video Sparks More Questions
One of the biggest points of discussion in the case has been a video that allegedly shows a heated argument shortly before Nolan went missing.
Jayvon offered a different explanation for the footage, saying the argument shown in the video was not between Nolan and his friends. Instead, he claimed the conflict involved another person on the island who was acting aggressively while his parents were attempting to get him to leave.
The person who originally recorded the viral video also reportedly confirmed there was an argument on Horn Island involving a mixed-race teenager and a white teenager, but said that situation was separate from the reason the video gained attention online.
Meanwhile, Nolan’s family continues to question the timeline surrounding his disappearance.
Nolan vanished on July 4 after traveling by boat with friends to Horn Island. His body was recovered days later and was identified through dental records.
His mother, Christine Wonsley, became emotional while speaking about the moment she realized something was wrong.
“We just want to know what happened and why our baby didn’t come home,” she said during a press briefing.
Christine explained that the last time she saw Nolan was July 3, when he cooked dinner for her before staying overnight at a friend’s house. The next day, he left with friends for the boating trip but never returned with the group.
Family Questions Phone Evidence and Timeline
One of the biggest concerns raised by Nolan’s family involves his cellphone.
Christine said she immediately tried tracking Nolan’s location after learning he was missing. She said the location information from Life360 appeared to show his phone was on land, which confused the family.
A friend, who was also the mother of two of Nolan’s friends, was later able to locate and return the phone to Christine.
When the family checked the device, they noticed something they found unusual.
Christine said Nolan’s Snapchat accounts contained no saved photos or videos from that day, despite the family checking before the usual 24-hour expiration period.
“When we opened it up there was nothing. There were no saved pictures. There were no snaps from that day,” she said.
The family’s attorney Ben Crump has also questioned why Nolan would leave his phone behind if he willingly decided to stay on the island while others returned because of boat problems.
“If he made a decision to stay behind, would an 18-year-old college student say, ‘Go ahead without me, I don’t want my cell phone or anything?’ It just doesn’t add up,” Crump said.
Independent Autopsy Planned as Investigation Continues
Nolan’s parents are pushing for a complete investigation into his death and have requested an independent autopsy.
Crump said former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and actor-director Tyler Perry are helping the family cover the cost of the independent examination, which will take place in Washington, D.C.
Authorities have said there is currently no evidence pointing to foul play, but Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has urged the public to allow investigators time to complete their work.
The official autopsy results from the Jackson County Coroner’s Office have not yet been released.
Nolan, who played wide receiver for Southwest Mississippi Community College, was preparing for his sophomore football season before his death. His family, friends, and supporters continue to demand answers as investigators work to uncover what happened during the final moments of the young athlete’s life.
