Victoria Coren Mitchell was left genuinely baffled after Only Connect contestants somehow cracked a question she had already written off as virtually impossible.

The BBC quiz show host was presenting what she called her “least favourite question in the whole series” when Team The Jukeboxers produced the correct answer — leaving Coren Mitchell visibly shocked.

The fiendish sequence began with two mathematical equations. The first amounted to 20 acres, while the second came to 43 acres. The next clue was simply a picture of a combine harvester.

Somehow, the team worked out that the final answer was a key.

The connection was to The Wurzels’ No 1 hit The Combine Harvester, which includes the famous line: “I got 20 acres and you got 43 / Now I got a brand new combine harvester and I’ll give you the key.”

Coren Mitchell could barely believe they had got there.

“This is my least favourite question in the whole series. I think it’s ungettable. I hate almost everything about it. I said nobody could get it,” she told the contestants.

And she quickly explained why.

“Here’s my problem. One… why would you look at that and it says square feet, why would you change it into acres?” she said.

“Two, in doing that, how would you know how many acres it was? Three, what’s that then got to do with this weird machinery?”

Even identifying the combine harvester did not solve the final leap for her.

“Even if you somehow went, ‘Oh that’s a combine harvester from the song’, how would you know that it goes, ‘And I’ll give you the key’?”

Her verdict was unmistakable: “Tell me I’m not alone. It doesn’t make any sense, does it? It makes no sense.”

Yet somehow, The Jukeboxers had followed the trail all the way from two seemingly random measurements to a combine harvester — and finally to the key.

For once, the Only Connect contestants had managed to leave the person asking the question looking almost as confused as everyone else.
