“American Idol” alum Clay Aiken recently opened up about why he is “perfectly fine” being single at age 47, and his explanation is surprisingly relatable.
Clay Aiken first rose to fame in 2003 when he finished as runner-up on Season 2 of American Idol. He later became a multi-platinum recording artist with his debut album Measure of a Man, joining the ranks of some of the show’s most successful alumni.
Over the years, his career was often discussed alongside public attention on his personal life. In 2008, he came out publicly as gay in a People magazine cover story. He later said the decision meant losing a large portion of his early fanbase, though he noted that attitudes have changed significantly since then.
Today, Aiken is a father to a teenage son, Parker, whom he shares with his close friend and music producer Jaymes Foster. He has said that becoming a parent played a major role in his decision to come out, explaining that he wanted to raise his child with honesty and openness.
Despite his success and public life, Aiken says he is currently single—and completely at peace with it.
In a recent interview, he explained that at this stage in his life, he has no desire to drastically change his habits for a relationship.
He said he feels “too old to change” his ways for anyone, and prefers a lifestyle where he can simply be himself. For him, a perfect relationship would be one where both people are comfortable with quiet time and independence, without feeling pressured to constantly interact.
He added that this doesn’t mean he is closed off to love, but rather that any future relationship would need to fit naturally into the life he already has.
Aiken also reflected that in his younger years, people often feel pressured to adjust themselves for relationships, but as they get older, they tend to value comfort and authenticity more than compromise.
For him, being single isn’t about giving up on love—it’s about understanding what kind of life and connection truly makes him comfortable.
