Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney branded the World Cup final half-time show ‘crap’ in a brutally honest verdict. The opening 45 minutes of Argentina and Spain ended 0-0 with the European champions the better of the two sides at the break before a star-studded cast took to the pitch.

The World Cup final has already come under major scrutiny with the pre-match show delaying kick-off by six minutes. While Donald Trump’s appearance at the Met Life Stadium caused major delays for fans and members of the media getting into the ground due to heightened security measures.

Spain were the more attacking of the two sides, with Argentina failing to register a single shot in the opening 45 minutes, while the European champions went close through Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal.

When the half-time whistle blew, players quickly left the field of play and it was a huge 27 minutes and 18 seconds until they returned, with the half-time show taking place.

As per the International Football Association Board rules, the half-time break should be no longer than 15 minutes, with the interval in breach of those rules.

Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira, Gustavo Dudamel and BTS all performed in the half-time show, which was curated by Chris Martin from Coldplay. However, Rooney wasn’t impressed.

Speaking on the BBC, Rooney said: “I’ll be honest, mine (highlight) was when it finished. I like lot of those artists but I thought it was crap.

“I did, honestly. It just didn’t get me going. I want the football to come back on. I like Burna Boy, I like Bieber, I like Shakira. That was flat.”

Micah Richards, who picked the performances of Shakira and Burna Boy as his highlights, called former international team-mate Rooney “miserable” for his frank assessment.

With the conversation following an advert promoting the BBC, host Gabby Logan added: “I’ll tell you what else you get on the BBC: honest reviews”.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced plans for the show – which was curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin – in March last year.

Fans were left shocked to see Madonna arrive into the stadium on a buggy with Brazilian legends Ronaldo and Ronaldinho driving the cart.

One fan said: “Madonna, Ronaldo the Phenomenon, and Ronaldinho Gaúcho together – never thought I’d see this.”

Another said: “No one could imagine Ronaldo and Ronaldinho Gaúcho in Madonna’s car.”
