Justin Moore Has Long Honored Military Families
Moore, 42, has frequently incorporated tributes to the military into his public performances. His connection to that subject is especially evident in “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home,” a song written about the lasting impact of losing someone in military service.
The song has also been featured in major military-themed events. Moore performed it at the National Memorial Day Concert, underscoring the song’s place within his live repertoire and his broader support for military families and service members.
That history helps put the latest concert moment into context. Rather than planning the national anthem as part of his set, Moore responded directly to the audience after their chant began.

Moore Opens Up About Sobriety and a Difficult Year
The concert moment comes as Moore has also been candid about significant changes in his personal life.
During a recent appearance on Tracy Lawrence’s TL’s Road House, the singer discussed his decision to temporarily step away from performing to seek treatment for alcohol abuse.
Moore has since spoken publicly about entering a 30-day rehabilitation program. In the podcast conversation, he described how his drinking gradually changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually becoming an everyday habit. He has said that he is now sober and has been working to make different choices for himself and his family.
By August, Moore said he had reached his 65th day of sobriety. He also explained that he wanted to use his experience to help others and set a better example for his children.
The decision followed a period in which Moore temporarily stepped away from touring to focus on his health. He returned to performing about a month later and began discussing the experience more openly with fans.
The Health Concern Behind Moore’s Changing Appearance
Moore also addressed another subject that had caught fans’ attention: changes in the appearance of his neck.
During his conversation with Tracy Lawrence, the singer acknowledged that he had been dealing with health concerns but emphasized that “nothing [was] life-threatening, thankfully.”
The noticeable fullness around his neck had initially raised a much more serious possibility. Doctors examined the area because they could not immediately rule out cancer.
Testing ultimately showed that the mass was a lipoma, a benign, non-cancerous growth made up of fatty tissue.
Moore explained that doctors did not recommend surgery because of where the mass was located and the potential effect an operation could have on his voice.
“They said it would be very, very difficult to do surgery and it may affect my singing and even my speaking voice.”
For a professional singer, protecting his voice was clearly an important consideration.
Despite the unusual appearance of the growth, Moore said it does not cause him discomfort. He even approached the situation with his characteristic sense of humor, joking that he now looks like a “linebacker, circa 1982” because of his thicker neck.
A Spontaneous Moment During a Changing Chapter
Moore’s decision to stop his concert and sing the national anthem came during a period when the singer has been unusually open about his life away from the stage.
In recent months, he has discussed his sobriety, his decision to seek treatment, his health scare and his return to performing. He has also continued to appear onstage and reconnect with audiences after taking time away from touring.
