A challenging code-breaking puzzle on ITV’s The 1% Club left viewers scratching their heads, with only two contestants successfully deciphering the hidden message and securing a share of the £46,500 jackpot.
Hosted by Lee Mack, the popular quiz show tests contestants with a series of increasingly difficult logic-based questions. The final challenge is designed to be particularly demanding, with only around 1% of the UK population expected to answer it correctly.
However, the secret-code puzzle featured in the Saturday episode proved especially challenging, leaving two contestants unable to find the solution while two others worked it out.

Can You Crack the Hidden Message?
In the episode, just four contestants made it through to the final stage, where they had the opportunity to answer the last question and win a share of the prize money.
The challenge centred on Peter, who had recently rediscovered an old diary written in a secret code. Unfortunately, he could no longer remember how to decipher it.
Lee Mack presented the contestants with the following puzzle:
“Can you crack the code to find out what the underlined word is? WH89 I GR1W UP I WA92 21 B8 A 5L1RI72.”
At first glance, the seemingly random combination of letters and numbers offered few obvious clues. Contestants needed to identify the pattern behind the code before they could uncover the missing message.
Two players failed to solve the puzzle, but the other two managed to work out the answer correctly.

The Answer Was Hidden in the Numbers
Lee eventually revealed that the coded message read:
“When I grow up I want to be a florist.”
The key to solving the puzzle was recognising how Peter had substituted numbers for letters. Wherever possible, he had replaced a letter with a digit whose name begins with that letter.
Once contestants identified this simple but easily overlooked pattern, the seemingly confusing sequence became much easier to understand.
The two successful contestants, Maisy and Jasmine, were delighted to discover that they had cracked the code. Their correct answers meant they both left the show with a share of the £46,500 prize.

Another 1% Club Puzzle Sparks Debate Among Viewers
The hidden-code challenge was not the only question from The 1% Club to generate discussion. In another recent episode, contestants faced an animal-related puzzle that divided viewers over the correct answer.
The question asked: “Without reordering any letters, how many animals appear in the sequence below?”
The sequence displayed was “PHEASANTORTOISEALION.”
Viewers tried to identify as many animal names as possible within the uninterrupted string of letters. However, the wording of the question quickly became a point of contention on social media.
Lee Mack eventually revealed that six animals could be found in the sequence: pheasant, sealion, ant, seal, tortoise and lion.
While some viewers accepted the answer, others argued that the question was poorly worded and disagreed with the inclusion of certain creatures.
One viewer expressed their frustration, writing: “#The1PercentClub An ant is NOT an animal! Outrage!”
Another challenged the answer on the grounds that the creatures belonged to different biological groups.
“Pheasant is a bird, ant is an insect, seal and sealion are mammals, so the correct answer should be 2 (lion and tortoise).
“If the question was ‘how many creatures…’ then it’s 6. Bad question wording #The1PercentClub”
A further viewer echoed the objection, posting: “#The1PercentClub An ant is an insect not an animal!”
Another agreed, commenting: “Ant is an insect.. #The1PercentClub…”

Viewers Disagree Over What Counts as an Animal
Not everyone shared the criticism. Other fans took to social media to defend the programme’s answer, pointing out that insects are animals too.
One viewer questioned the widespread disagreement, writing: “The amount of people on the hashtag saying an ant isn’t an animal… #The1PercentClub.”
Another was more direct in their response: “To all those saying otherwise. Yes an ant is an animal. All insects are. #The1PercentClub”
The debate highlighted how the interpretation of a question can sometimes prove just as challenging as solving the puzzle itself.
While the hidden-code question tested contestants’ ability to recognise a numerical pattern, the animal puzzle prompted viewers to consider the meaning of the word animal and whether the question’s wording left room for confusion.
