Taylor Swift Makes Heartfelt Tribute to Dolly Parton Following Country Legend’s Death at 80
Taylor Swift has paid tribute to Dolly Parton in more than one way following the country music icon’s death at 80.
The 36-year-old pop star’s Rhode Island mansion was recently photographed with its American flag lowered to half-staff in Parton’s honor. The image was shared on Instagram by Rhode Island and Massachusetts-based content creator Kayla Mandeville, who captioned the post: “Flag lowered outside of Taylor Swift’s mansion in honor of Dolly Parton.”
Swift bought the sprawling coastal property for $17.75 million in 2013.
The tribute came after US President Donald Trump ordered American flags to be flown at half-staff on Tuesday to honor Parton.
Swift also publicly mourned Parton on the same day, releasing an emotional statement following the singer’s death at a Nashville medical center at the age of 80.
Taylor Swift remembers Dolly Parton
Swift, who began her career as a country singer before becoming one of the world’s biggest pop stars, described the idea of a world without Parton as difficult to comprehend.
“A world without Dolly doesn’t feel possible, real, or right,” Swift said in a statement shared with the Daily Mail.
She went on to reflect on the enormous impact Parton had throughout her life and career, saying the generosity with which she spent her time and the countless people she helped would ensure that her legacy continued.
“She was truly the gift that kept on giving,” Swift wrote. “Dolly gave us someone to look up to while encouraging us to be who we are as individuals.”
Swift also praised Parton for the way she shared her wisdom, describing her lessons about life as gentle, honest and often funny.
The singer continued by highlighting the contrast in Parton’s personality and public image. She said Parton could preserve a sense of mystery and fantasy while remaining completely open in the areas that mattered most.
Swift called her “true grace and true grit, all in one dazzling person,” while praising the compassion she showed toward people facing difficulties and the strength she displayed in protecting her own worth as an artist.
Her tribute ended with a personal expression of gratitude for everything Parton had given the world.
“Along with her other fans, I am so grateful for all of it,” Swift wrote. She thanked Parton for the melodies and lyrics that could “thaw even the coldest hearts,” as well as for providing millions of books to children around the world so they could discover the same love of stories that Parton herself had.
Swift also recalled the example Parton set for young girls.
“For the tightropes she walked so that young girls like me could grow up dreaming of joining the circus too,” she wrote. “Dolly, I’ll think of you each step of the way.”
Parton’s death was confirmed Tuesday in an Instagram video posted by her nephew, Bryan Seaver.
Parton died after a brief battle with cancer
Later that day, representatives for Parton confirmed that the singer had died following a “brief battle with cancer.” The statement, provided to People, did not identify the type of cancer she had been battling.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched,” her representatives said.
“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones.”
The announcement brought an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians, celebrities and fans, including Swift, who had long admired both Parton’s music and her charitable work.
Swift and Travis Kelce supported Parton’s Imagination Library
Swift’s connection with Parton extended beyond music.
Shortly before Swift and her husband Travis Kelce tied the knot at Madison Square Garden in New York City in July, the couple donated a total of $26 million to charitable causes, including Parton’s Imagination Library.
Swift and Kelce gave $2 million specifically to the Imagination Library, the book-gifting program Parton founded more than 30 years ago with the goal of fostering a love of reading among children around the world.
The donation prompted Parton to record a personal video message for the couple. She said she was “overjoyed” by their generosity and thanked them repeatedly for supporting her charity.
“Taylor and Travis, it’s Dolly,” she began. “I was just told that you two are making a donation of two million dollars to my Imagination Library. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Parton said she was “blown away and overjoyed” by the gift and noted that the couple had made giving back an important part of their lives.
She also used the opportunity to joke with the newlyweds about their plans for starting a family.
“So, hey, when you have your firstborn, can I have it? Because that is gonna be one special baby!” Parton joked.
She then returned to the mission behind her charitable foundation, saying it was centered on the principles of “Dream More, Care More, Learn More and Be More.”
Parton thanked Swift and Kelce once again, saying their contribution would allow the organization to continue that mission on an even larger scale.
“Thank you, and know that I will always love you,” she added.
