Strictly’s Delta Goodrem Reveals Her True Feelings After Injury Comeback… and a Hidden Gesture With Kai Speaks Volumes!

Strictly’s Delta Goodrem Reveals Her True Emotions After Injury Comeback Through Telling Gesture

Delta Goodrem may have delivered an outstanding Rumba on Strictly Come Dancing, but a body language expert believes one emotional moment after the performance revealed just how much her return to the ballroom meant to her.

The Australian singer, partnered with professional dancer Kai Widdrington, made an impressive comeback on Saturday evening after recovering from a rib injury. Her performance earned her the first 10 of the series, marking a significant moment in her return to the competition.

With Halloween Week approaching, Delta and Kai have secured another week in the contest. However, according to body language expert Sean Johns, who spoke exclusively to Reach’s Express, the singer’s reaction when the music stopped offered a glimpse into the emotions behind her successful return.

The emotional moment that caught an expert’s attention

Johns focused on Delta’s immediate reaction after finishing her Rumba, noting that she turned directly towards Kai rather than acknowledging the judges or the audience.

“Watch the first two seconds after the music stops. Delta doesn’t turn to the judges or the crowd; she goes straight into Kai, her face buried in his shoulder, both arms wrapped round his back, and the hug holds well past the point where a stage hug would break,” he explained.

He suggested that the embrace appeared to carry more emotional weight than a typical post-performance celebration.

“That is not a celebration hug; a celebration hug is upright and looks outwards. Hiding the face in a partner is what the body does when it has been holding something for a week and can finally put it down.”

For Johns, the way Delta sought comfort in her dance partner indicated that the experience of returning to the ballroom had been emotionally significant after her time away with an injury.

He also pointed to another gesture that followed the embrace. As Delta and Kai separated, she raised a hand to her cheek before turning towards the crowd.

“When they part, her hand goes up to her cheek before she looks anywhere else, the gesture we use to catch a tear we haven’t decided to show. Only then does she find the crowd,” he said.

Delta’s confidence is returning, but the injury may still be affecting her

Johns contrasted Delta’s emotional reaction after the dance with the composed manner in which she entered the ballroom.

He observed that she walked onto the floor holding Kai’s hand, with her chin level, shoulders back and expression controlled. While that composure helped her get through the performance, he suggested that the embrace afterwards revealed a different side of her experience.

“Compare that with the walk-on: hand in Kai’s, chin level, shoulders back, a composed face. The composure got her through the dance; the hug is what it cost.”

He also noticed that Delta kept her arm around Kai’s neck as they walked away from the dance floor.

“Off the floor, the same two gestures come back. Her arm stays hooked around Kai’s neck the whole walk, which is a body that doesn’t want to let go of its support yet,” he added.

Despite these observations, Johns believed Delta was keen to ensure that her injury did not become the defining story of her time on the show.

“She wants this filed as a blip, not a story, and her hands are already arguing for it,” he said.

His comments suggest that, although Delta appeared determined to move forward, her recovery may still be influencing how she approaches the competition.

The judges disagree on Delta’s Rumba

Delta’s return attracted considerable attention from the judging panel, with Anton Du Beke particularly enthusiastic about her performance.

Speaking after Saturday night’s dance, Anton explained what he looks for in a Rumba and why Delta’s performance stood out to him.

“I’m a bit old-fashioned with the Rumba because I like it to be romantic, I don’t want it to be sexy. I don’t want all the unpleasantness; I want love. And I have to tell you, this is my favourite dance of the series, by a million miles,” he said.

Anton awarded Delta a 10, making her Rumba the first performance of the series to receive that score. Craig Revel Horwood, however, gave her a seven, creating a noticeable difference in the judges’ assessments.

Johns suggested that the gap reflected the limitations Delta may have faced while dancing with her injury still a consideration.

“The danger is that the body doing the dance was a careful one, and careful reads as careful. Kai chose the rumba to rest the rib, Anton gave it a ten and Craig a seven, and that gap is where she is: between the emotion she showed and the risk she couldn’t take,” he explained.

In his assessment, Delta managed to communicate emotion through the performance, but the need to remain cautious may have prevented her from taking the physical risks that could have pushed the dance further.

Strictly fans react to Delta’s comeback

Delta’s return prompted plenty of discussion among viewers on X, formerly Twitter, with some praising her performance and others questioning the judges’ scores.

One supporter argued that the Rumba was a sensible choice given her recent injury, writing: “Delta was given the Rumba, because it’s slow and gentle, with her injury in mind. But she knocked it out of the park, I enjoyed it and I love that Celine Dion song. She definitely deserved that 10 from Anton.”

The viewer praised both the choreography and Delta’s performance, believing she had earned the high mark despite the circumstances surrounding her return.

Not everyone agreed, however. Another viewer felt Anton had been overly generous with his scores, suggesting sympathy for contestants recovering from setbacks might have influenced his decisions.

“Overmarked by Anton, especially. There are 3 Judges who give marks that folks can reasonably understand then Anton who tonight handed out sympathy votes to Shaun and Delta. Time for a change,” the viewer posted.

The contrasting reactions highlighted the debate surrounding Delta’s comeback: while some fans celebrated her achievement, others questioned whether the marks accurately reflected the technical quality of the dance.

What’s next for Delta and Kai on Strictly?

Delta and Kai will return to the ballroom for Halloween Week, where they are set to perform a Viennese Waltz to Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers.

Following her comeback performance, Delta took to Instagram to share her excitement and gratitude at being able to compete for another week.

“It’s all coming back to me… Couldn’t have asked for a better first night back in the ballroom. Thank you for your support, we’re so grateful to be dancing for another week,” she wrote.

Her message reflected her appreciation for the support she had received throughout her recovery and return to the show.

With another performance ahead, Delta will have an opportunity to build on her Rumba success. Whether she can regain the freedom to take greater risks on the dance floor remains to be seen, but her first week back has already given viewers plenty to discuss.
