Stephen Wilson Jr. Releases “Cørnerman,” A Heartfelt Tribute to His Late Father
Stephen Wilson Jr. has turned one of the hardest days of his life into a song.
On September 15, the Indiana-born, Nashville-based artist released “Cørnerman,” a deeply personal tribute to his father, marking eight years since his death. The release also arrives on the third anniversary of Wilson Jr.’s debut double album, søn of dad, a 22-track project built around family, grief, memory and the complicated bond between a son and his father.
“Cørnerman” is a song about grief that never really leaves
Wilson Jr. lost his father in 2018, and the impact of that loss has continued to shape his songwriting. “Cørnerman” places that grief inside the world Wilson Jr. knows especially well: boxing.
The song looks back on his father as the person he still wishes were there in his corner, offering the advice and encouragement that once helped him through life. The boxing imagery gives the song its emotional framework, turning the idea of a cornerman into something larger than a coach standing beside a fighter. It becomes a way for Wilson Jr. to express how much he still misses the guidance of his father.
The song also captures the confusion that can remain years after a devastating loss. Wilson Jr. asks why his father had to die so young and wrestles with the fact that there was never a proper goodbye.
At its heart, “Cørnerman” is about needing someone who is no longer there.

A final phone call from the road
Wilson Jr. previously opened up to Rolling Stone about the day his father died.
He was driving through Kentucky, trying to make it home in time to say goodbye. He ultimately could not get there before his father passed, so their final goodbye happened over the phone while Wilson Jr. was still in his car.
His father’s last request was simple: he wanted his son to write a good song for him.
Wilson Jr. has spent years doing exactly that.
The loss of his father has surfaced repeatedly throughout his music, including on søn of dad. The album itself was released on September 15, 2023, five years after his father’s death, and its themes of family and loss are central to Wilson Jr.’s work.
The story behind Stephen Wilson Jr.’s music
Before søn of dad, Wilson Jr. introduced his sound with the bon aqua EP in 2023. The seven-song project included “American Gothic,” featuring Hailey Whitters, along with “Year to Be Young 1994.” Big Loud Records announced the EP in March 2023 as Wilson Jr.’s debut project with the label.
Later that year came søn of dad, an ambitious 22-track double album that established Wilson Jr. as an artist with a sound difficult to fit neatly into one genre.
He has described his music as “Death Cab for Country,” reflecting the way he blends country with elements of indie rock, grunge and other influences. His musical heroes have included Willie Nelson, Kurt Cobain and Bruce Springsteen, and those influences can be heard throughout his work.
That mixture is particularly apparent in songs that move between traditional country storytelling and a darker, rock-influenced sound. His writing frequently draws from his own history, making family, growing up and loss recurring themes rather than occasional subjects.
A father who shaped more than his music
Wilson Jr.’s father raised him and his siblings as a single father in Seymour, Indiana.
He was also an amateur boxer and a two-time Indiana State Golden Gloves Champion. Outside the ring, he worked as a second-generation auto body mechanic and drove a bus to help support the family.
Those details make the boxing language in “Cørnerman” especially meaningful. Wilson Jr. isn’t reaching for an unrelated metaphor. He is returning to something that was part of his family life and connecting it directly to the relationship he had with his father.
The result is a song about absence told through the vocabulary of someone who once taught him how to fight.
Four CMA Award nominations cap a major year
The release of “Cørnerman” comes during an important stretch in Wilson Jr.’s career.
He recently received four nominations for the 60th Annual CMA Awards. His nominations include Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year for “Gary,” along with New Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year. Wilson Jr. was the sole songwriter on “Gary” and co-directed its music video with Tim Cofield.
The 60th Annual CMA Awards are scheduled for November 18 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
Wilson Jr. also released “Hardwired,” a collaboration with Miranda Lambert, on July 31. The song marked another notable addition to his 2026 catalog.
Wilson Jr. remains on the road
There is little downtime ahead.
Wilson Jr. is continuing his Gary The Torch Tour, with dates scheduled throughout the remainder of 2026. Current listings include shows in Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix, Birmingham, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Nashville, among others.
He is also part of the 2026 Outlaw Music Festival Tour, sharing select dates with Willie Nelson & Family and other artists. The 2026 lineup includes names such as The Avett Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Lukas Nelson, Margo Price and Stephen Wilson Jr.
For Wilson Jr., though, “Cørnerman” brings the focus back to where so much of his music began: his father.
Eight years after that final phone call, the conversation continues through a song. And this time, Wilson Jr. is answering the request his father left him with.
