Scotty McCreery’s Lifelong Dream Comes True as Josh Turner and Randy Travis Welcome Him Into the Grand Ole Opry
For more than a decade, Scotty McCreery had given the same answer whenever he was asked about his biggest career goal: one day, he wanted to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
On April 20, 2024, that dream finally became reality.
The North Carolina native was officially welcomed into the Grand Ole Opry family in Nashville, with two of the artists he has admired throughout his career, Josh Turner and Randy Travis, standing beside him for the milestone moment. McCreery, visibly overwhelmed by the honor, admitted that he would now have to come up with a new bucket list.
The ceremony carried an added layer of meaning because McCreery was inducted by Turner, an artist whose music played an important role during McCreery’s rise to fame, while Country Music Hall of Famer Randy Travis made a surprise appearance alongside him.
McCreery had been invited to join the Opry just four months earlier, when Garth Brooks surprised him during an Opry Country Christmas show in December 2023.
Now, after years of performing on the Opry stage, McCreery officially became its newest member.
A Night Built Around McCreery’s Country Music Heroes
Before the induction itself, McCreery took the stage to perform several songs connected to his past, present and future.
He performed his then-climbing single, “Cab in a Solo,” as well as “Fall of Summer,” a song from his upcoming album Rise and Fall. He also delivered an emotional rendition of Randy Travis’ “Three Wooden Crosses,” a song he had performed as a young aspiring country singer.
The choice was particularly fitting. McCreery has long cited Travis as one of the artists who influenced him, and he had been singing “Three Wooden Crosses” since he was 15.
When the song ended, McCreery’s musical heroes joined him onstage.
Randy Travis appeared alongside Josh Turner, creating a moment McCreery could hardly have imagined when he was first starting out.
Turner’s connection to McCreery goes back to the singer’s American Idol days. During his run on the show in 2011, the then-17-year-old McCreery performed Turner’s “Your Man” and “Long Black Train.” Those performances helped showcase the deep baritone that became one of his trademarks.
Turner recalled first hearing that a young contestant had performed one of his songs on American Idol. He later learned that McCreery had attended one of his concerts shortly before auditioning for the television competition.
The admiration clearly went both ways. By the time McCreery received his Opry invitation, Turner had become both a musical influence and a close friend. McCreery specifically chose him to carry out the induction.
Josh Turner Passes the Torch to a New Generation
Turner’s induction speech centered on the tradition that connects generations of country artists.
Standing on the wooden circle at the center of the Opry stage, he reflected on the significance of the floorboards brought over from the historic Ryman Auditorium. He connected that physical circle with the Carter Family classic “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” a song that has come to represent the way country music traditions are passed from one generation to the next.
Turner described himself as a bridge between Randy Travis’ generation and McCreery’s, before considering what McCreery’s own influence might mean for artists who follow him.
He also referenced George Jones’ “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” while praising McCreery for carrying forward the legacy of the artists who came before him.
Turner’s message went beyond McCreery’s success as a singer and songwriter. He praised him as a husband and father, and expressed confidence that country music was in good hands with artists like him.
Finally, Turner presented McCreery with his official Opry Member Award.
For McCreery, the significance of the moment was almost impossible to put into words.
“One Day I Wanna Be a Member of the Grand Ole Opry”
Holding the Opry trophy, McCreery took a moment before addressing the audience.
He thanked Turner and admitted that he wished he had prepared a speech. After 13 years of interviews, he said, the answer to the question about his biggest career goal had always been the same: becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Now that it had happened, McCreery joked that he would have to go home and start writing a new bucket list.
The 30-year-old singer then turned his attention to his family, who were watching from the audience, including his wife, Gabi, and their 18-month-old son, Avery.
McCreery became emotional as he imagined telling his son about the night someday.
Avery might not have understood what was happening at the time, McCreery said, but one day he would be able to tell him that becoming an Opry member had been his father’s dream, and that the dream came true.
He encouraged his son to chase his own dreams, just as he had chased his.
Then came the words that captured the weight of the occasion: McCreery said he was proud to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
McCreery Takes the Opry Stage as an Official Member
The night did not end with the presentation.
As an official member of the Opry, McCreery returned to the stage to perform “Five More Minutes,” his deeply personal hit that has become one of the defining songs of his career.
Before beginning the performance, he acknowledged what membership meant to him. He described the honor as both humbling and a responsibility to carry forward the torch of country music and the traditions represented by the Grand Ole Opry.
McCreery promised to do his part.
His official induction also marked another milestone in a journey that began with his American Idol victory in 2011. He made his Opry debut on June 10, 2011, shortly after winning the show’s 10th season. Nearly 13 years later, he returned to the circle as an official member.
On April 20, McCreery became the 227th member of the Grand Ole Opry, adding his name to one of country music’s most storied institutions.
From Garth Brooks’ Surprise Invitation to Opry Membership
The path to the induction began in December 2023.
During an Opry Country Christmas performance, Garth Brooks surprised McCreery onstage and invited him to become the newest member of the Opry family.
At the time, McCreery said that being worthy of Opry membership had been a longtime goal. Having Brooks deliver the invitation and Turner later handle the induction made the honor especially meaningful because both artists were personal heroes.
Four months later, the invitation became official membership.
The Opry itself described McCreery’s induction as the fulfillment of a long-held dream, with Turner serving as his inducting member.
A New Chapter for Scotty McCreery
The Opry induction arrived at an important point in McCreery’s career.
His fifth studio album, Rise and Fall, was scheduled for release on May 10, 2024, with “Cab in a Solo” and “Fall of Summer” among the songs he performed around the induction. The album represented the next chapter for an artist who had already spent more than a decade building his career in country music.
McCreery was also scheduled to return to the Grand Ole Opry on May 11, one day after the album’s release.
That appearance was set to include a special album-release event in Studio A inside the Opry House. The first 400 ticketholders who purchased McCreery’s fifth studio album through the Opry Shop that evening were to receive exclusive access to the event and an intimate acoustic session with the North Carolina native.
For McCreery, however, the significance of April 20 went far beyond a new album or another career achievement.
He had spent years saying that becoming a Grand Ole Opry member was the dream. On that night, standing between Josh Turner and Randy Travis with his family watching from the audience, he finally had the chance to say that dream had come true.
And with that, Scotty McCreery began a new chapter as an official member of the Grand Ole Opry.
