Since Apple TV broke onto the market in 2019, the streaming platform wasted no time in cementing itself as one of the biggest studios out there. With Oscar and Emmy wins, Apple TV offers something for everybody.
While many of its shows turn into instant hits, some can fall under the radar. Such is the case of the underrated comedy Trying, one of Apple TV’s long-running shows. As the series just returned for Season 5, Trying continued a rare trend of perfect scores.
Trying Is a Critics’ Darling
Trying is a British comedy series created by Apple TV alongside the BBC. The show was created by Andy Wolton, and premiered on May 1, 2020. The series features a fantastic 97% approval score from critics across five seasons, and 91% from the audience.
Season 1 debuted with a Certified Fresh 88% score from critics and 95% from the audience, and it’s the lowest-rated of all. Season 3 is the only one without a score, as it only features four critics reviews, but all of them are positive.
Season 5 just returned with another perfect score, just like Seasons 2 and 4, continuing an extremely rare trend. The score comes from five reviews, but they are all stellar.
Metro.co.uk’s Asiya Iftikhar argued, “The fourth outing was by far the rockiest… It’s why I’m pleased to say that season five is a return to form.” Lady Geeks Media’s Gissane Sophia praised the series, writing, “Trying Season 5 brings us right back to the gorgeously comforting show we’re used to, and it does so with ample humor, wild antics, and solid performances throughout.”
Collider’s Tania Hussain called it Apple TV’s “best sitcom of all time” and argued, “Five seasons in, Trying remains one of the best-written, best-acted, and most emotionally rewarding comedies on television.”
There is no audience score yet, but among the reviews, one viewer called it the “perfect feel good comedy to watch when times are stressful as they are now in the world.”
The series follows Nikki and Jason, a couple who really want to become parents but who struggle with conceiving a child. In order to have a baby they decide to adopt, only to face a whole list of new challenges and surprises that come with the adoption process.
In Season 5, Nikki and Jason are dealing with the consequences of Princess and Tyler’s biological mother Kat turning up at their doorstep, and the whirlwind of chaos she brings into their settled family life.
Trying Turned Into an Instant Streaming Hit
Trying Season 5 premiered on July 8, and it didn’t take long for the sitcom to gain attention on streaming. The series is currently the fourth most-watched show globally, behind Silo, Cape Fear, and Sugar. In the U.S., the series is currently in ninth place, just ahead of For All Mankind‘s spinoff Star City.
