A new trailer for Olivia Colman’s “unconventional” romantic fantasy comedy film has been released. Based on the short story The Wicker Husband by Ursula Wills-Jones, Wicker stars The Crown actor as a lonely fisherwoman who fashions herself a ‘Wicker Husband’.
However, their “unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos” in her “otherwise conservative town”. Alongside Colman, the cast also includes Alexander Skarsgård (Infinity Pool), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Marli Su (Anna and the Apocalypse), Richard E. Grant (Loki) and Nabhaan Rizwan (Informer).
Written and directed by Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer, Wicker has already seen some strong reviews following its debut at Sundance Film Festival in January.
The film has received 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its premise and Colman’s “astounding” performance.
“Brought to life by yet another astounding performance by Olivia Colman, Wicker‘s treasure is in its hopeless romanticism that insists that pure love and adamant individuality can create irrevocable progress through osmosis,” wrote ScreenRant.
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter said: “A warming, sometimes poignant pleasure, a film full of lively personality and possessed of a rather humane outlook on our petty foibles.”
FandomWire praised the film’s ” very fun premise”, adding: “But what elevates the film from a novelty into something genuinely brilliant is the level of sincerity and emotion it brings to its silly, tongue-in-cheek storytelling.”
In our four-star review at Digital Spy, we called it a “must-see”, writing: “The movie’s biting, bawdy humour exists comfortably alongside its children’s storybook tone, turning Wicker into a work of strange excitement, where it feels like the comforts of youth are being graffitied with a wink and a smile.”
Wicker will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 30 October.
