Lexi Stephens earns a four-chair turn on ‘The Voice’ Season 30 as Adam Levine predicts she could win
Lexi Stephens needed only one performance to turn all four coaches’ chairs on The Voice Season 30. The 23-year-old New York singer delivered Sienna Spiro’s “Die on This Hill” during the second night of the Blind Auditions, prompting Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green and Queen Latifah to turn around for her.
Levine was the first coach to hit his button. Clarkson followed, then Green and Latifah, making Stephens one of the night’s four-chair turns.
Adam Levine was immediately determined to get Lexi on his team
Stephens’ performance came at the end of the September 22 episode, and the coaches quickly made it clear that they were ready to compete for her.
Host Carson Daly even warned that the coaches were going to fight for the singer. Once the performance ended, all four coaches stood and applauded while the audience cheered.
Levine was the first to explain why he had turned his chair so quickly. He told Stephens that he wanted to prove through his actions that he deserved to be her coach, describing her voice as having the intangible soulfulness that made him willing to fight for her.
Then he went a step further.
Levine told Stephens that her performance was “by far” the best Blind Audition and said he thought she could win The Voice. He finished his pitch with a simple declaration: “You are the one.”
Stephens had impressed more than one coach, however.
Queen Latifah praised the performance as “beautiful” and “masterful,” saying she had deliberately waited because she loved the song and felt Stephens delivered every note. Green also offered strong praise, calling Stephens one of the most talented people he had seen on the stage so far.
Green even told her that while he was not sure he could coach her, he wanted the opportunity to collaborate with her.
Kelly Clarkson also made her case. She pointed to her own experience as a The Voice winner and contestant on another singing competition, telling Stephens that she was good at navigating competitions.
Levine then reminded Stephens that he had won The Voice four times.
Who is Lexi Stephens?
Stephens has been building her musical background for years. She is originally from the Albany, New York, area and graduated from Palm Harbor University High School in Palm Harbor, Florida.
While in high school, she served as vice president of the campus a cappella group The After School Specials. She later attended the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where she studied musical theater and songwriting.
Stephens has also competed in a cappella beyond high school. At Berklee, she performed with Upper Structure, a group that won a semifinal at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella in spring 2024. The group went on to compete in the finals in New York City and finished third, with Stephens serving as the featured soloist on its performance of “Begin Again.”
Her experience also extends into musical theater. After graduating from college, Stephens landed the role of Bella in the White Plains Performing Arts Center production of Jagged Little Pill.
Stephens has said she began singing at a young age, initially focusing on pop music before turning her attention toward musical theater. In 2021, she also won a $3,000 scholarship as the top theater student in the Walker’s Rising Stars Scholarship Competition, which featured arts students from schools across Pinellas County, Florida.
She previously auditioned for ‘American Idol’
Stephens is no stranger to televised singing competitions.
In 2023, she auditioned for Season 21 of American Idol and, according to a fan-sourced American Idol website, received a Golden Ticket. Her audition, however, was not shown on television.
Her The Voice appearance marks a chance for viewers to see her compete on screen, this time in front of Levine, Clarkson, Green and Latifah.
Stephens has also developed an audience online. She has more than 13,000 TikTok followers, where she has posted covers including Bruno Mars’ “Talking to the Moon.”
Stephens’ ‘The Voice’ journey ended on a cliffhanger
Stephens has made it clear how meaningful the moment was for her. After filming her The Voice appearance, she shared her excitement on Instagram, writing that she had watched the show since she was very young and that stepping onto its stage felt “SURREAL.”
Her father was also backstage during the audition, and Stephens told the coaches he was a major fan of the show.
After receiving praise from all four coaches, Stephens was left with the difficult task of choosing who would guide her through the competition.
But viewers did not get an answer on September 22.
Just as Stephens began to reveal her decision, the episode ended, leaving her team choice for the third night of the Blind Auditions on September 23.
For Adam Levine, the stakes were especially clear. He had been the first coach to turn for Stephens, openly campaigned for her throughout the coaching discussion and went as far as predicting that she could win the entire competition.
The question left hanging at the end of the episode was whether that confidence would be enough to bring Stephens onto Team Adam.
