Netflix subscribers are just days away from diving into the streamer’s best Yellowstone replacement series when it officially returns with its second season next week. Led by an all-star ensemble cast that includes Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, Jack Schumacher, and more, this neo-Western drama series packs plenty of small-town tension, romance, and everything in between. It’s also based on a popular book series, setting up a budding franchise on Netflix that could rival the success of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.
Ransom Canyon season 2 arrives on Netflix in less than a week, picking up after the aftermath of Ransom Canyon season 1, which premiered last year. Often described as one of the original Netflix series that can rival Yellowstone, due to its contemporary Western feel and setting, Ransom Canyon chronicles an ongoing battle between three ranching dynasties in West Texas. It also dives into the passions and feuds between members of the small-town community, which run deep and make up most of the plot in the Netflix series.
Netflix’s Ransom Canyon Season 2 Arrives On July 23
Ransom Canyon season 2 officially arrives on Netflix on Thursday, July 23, 2026, with eight brand new episodes ready to binge. Following up on season 1’s 10-part installment, Ransom Canyon season 2 continues the small-town drama in the idyllic West Texas ranching community, although the real Ransom Canyon, Texas, differs greatly from what is shown in the romanticized series. Nevertheless, the series is brimming with Southern charm, new and old flames, and contentious battles for power, honor, and even vengeance.
Several notable characters from Ransom Canyon season 1 are already confirmed not to return in season 2. They include Eoin Macken and Andrew Liner, who played the father-son duo, who played Davis and Reid Collins, and James Brolin’s character, Cap Fuller. This means that several of the season 1 conflicts between Davis and Duhamel’s protagonist, Staten Kirkland, which ranged from legal battles to romantic triangles, will likely no longer continue in Ransom Canyon season 2. Additionally, several new cast members will be introduced, including Steve Howey, Ben Robson, and Patricia Clarkson.
Ransom Canyon is most like Yellowstone in that it combines the classic cowboy aesthetic with a modern-day feel, although season 1 does not become the dark, violent thriller that Yellowstone ultimately is. While Yellowstone and Ransom Canyon certainly share similarities, the first season of the Netflix neo-Western series was more melodramatic and even soapy, which, at times, Yellowstone can become, but ultimately, it compares more to shows like Virgin River. An edgier approach to Ransom Canyon season 2 could make it Netflix’s true answer to Yellowstone. For now, it remains the best option on the platform.
Ransom Canyon Is Netflix’s Best Yellowstone Replacement
As far as Netflix’s current slate of neo-Western series goes, Ransom Canyon remains one of, if not the, best replacement series for longtime fans of Yellowstone and its various spinoffs. Other viable options include Longmire, Territory, and Godless, but none are quite as similar as Ransom Canyon is. It will be interesting to see next week whether Netflix and creator April Blair, best known for Wednesday and All American, decide to lean more into a Yellowstone feel or maintain the lighter sense of violence and crime.
Ransom Canyon season 1 divided critics but pleased viewers, earning a 45% Rotten Tomatoes score and a much higher 73% audience score. This is quite similar to the overall reception of Yellowstone season 1, which got a 58% RT score and an 82% audience score. Yellowstone season 2 then skyrocketed to an 89% RT score, which is when the series really blossomed into a full-bodied franchise. If Ransom Canyon can follow a similar trajectory with its second season next week, it may just take the crown as Netflix’s official Yellowstone replacement.
