Better Than Most Supernatural Hits… Forgotten Fantasy Drama Quietly Lands on Streaming — Viewers Say It’s the Perfect Hidden Binge for Anyone Missing True Blood.

Vampire shows have always been popular with audiences, and now, one vampire show in particular is unexpectedly rising in the charts, eight years after its cancellation. Midnight, Texas, another creation from the mind of the author of the True Blood novels, is currently No. 8 on AMC+’s list of most-watched TV shows in the world. In the United States, the show is No. 7.

Midnight, Texas is also not the only vampire show in AMC+’s Top 10. Worldwide, The Vampire Lestat is at No. 2, and Interview with the Vampire is right behind Midnight, Texas at No. 9.

With the Anne Rice vampire series airing more recently, it’s no surprise those two shows are trending. Midnight, Texas, though, was canceled eight years ago, airing its final episode in December 2018. However, Midnight, Texas only just began streaming on AMC+ on Jul. 19. With the popularity of the other vampire shows, perhaps fans are looking to delve deeper into the genre.

Midnight, Texas premiered on NBC in July 2017. The supernatural drama is based on the books by author Charlaine Harris, who wrote The Southern Vampire Mysteries, a series of novels that was adapted into the TV series True Blood on HBO.

What Is Midnight, Texas About?

Midnight, Texas follows young psychic Manfred Bernardo, who is on the run from his past. The ghost of Bernardo’s grandmother tells him to seek refuge in the town of Midnight, Texas, where he will find a community to help him. When Bernardo arrives, he encounters a diverse characters, including a vampire, a witch, a fallen angel, a half-demon, and a were-creature. As they welcome Bernardo, they’re also left to face various threats from the outside world.

The series stars Franċois Arnaud (Heated Rivalry) as Bernardo, alongside Arielle Kebbel, Peter Mensah, Dylan Bruce, Parisa Fitz-Henley, Jason Lewis, Sarah Ramos, and Yul Vasquez. Midnight, Texas ran for two seasons before being canceled by NBC. After its cancellation, Universal Television shopped the series around to other outlets, without success.

Critics Were Mixed About Midnight, Texas

Midnight, Texas got mixed reviews from critics during its run. The series currently has a 61% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 87% audience score.

During Season 1, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “I just don’t see the pieces in place at the center of the cast or in the creative aspirations for Midnight, Texas to be anything more than a PG-rated version of what ought to be a decadent and overblown summer guilty pleasure.” And Variety wrote, “The best thing that can be said about Midnight, Texas is that its badness is at least amiable.” The AV Club said, “No amount of sex and violence can disguise the fact that this is reductive dramatics, aimed at the bottom of the audience’s intelligence, and the show lacks the self-awareness to realize it.”

However, not all reviews were bad. ScreenRant wrote, “Although the show’s NBC home greatly limits how far the show can go with sex, violence and the like, Midnight, Texas does squeeze in enough intrigue to keep viewers eager for more.” And TV Insider said, “Midnight is an oasis of the occult that thankfully keeps its fangs firmly in cheek, not taking its bizarre self too seriously.”

That said, it’s clear from Midnight, Texas‘s rise in the streaming charts that audiences have a thirst for vampires. Midnight, Texas is streaming on AMC+.
