Are You Listening? Robert De Niro Leads Netflix’s Chilling New Psychological Thriller — And Its Creepy Nursery Rhyme Is Already Setting Up One Seriously Unsettling Mystery

Netflix is bringing a chilling new psychological thriller to audiences this summer, with The Whisper Man set to premiere globally on August 28. Based on Alex North’s New York Times bestselling novel, the film combines a decades-old serial killer case with a story about grief, family estrangement, and a child’s disappearance.

At the center of the film are Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, and Michelle Monaghan, giving Netflix a particularly strong ensemble for a thriller built around a disturbing mystery.

A Father and Son Forced to Confront the Past

Scott stars as Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer whose life changes dramatically when his eight-year-old son is abducted. With the investigation offering few answers, Tom is forced to seek help from his estranged father, Pete Willis, played by De Niro.

Pete is a retired detective who was once involved in capturing Frank Carter, a notorious serial killer known as “The Whisper Man.” Although the case was closed years ago, the disappearance of Tom’s son begins to reveal unsettling similarities to the crimes associated with Carter.

As Tom and Pete work together to find the missing boy, they are drawn back into a case that neither expected to revisit. Their investigation also forces them to confront the fractured relationship between them.

Monaghan plays Amanda Beck, completing the film’s central trio as the investigation begins to unravel.

A Strong Supporting Cast

The film also features Michael Keaton, John Carroll Lynch, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto, and Will Brill.

Behind the camera, James Ashcroft, director of The Rule of Jenny Pen, is directing from a screenplay by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer.

Anthony and Joe Russo are producing through their AGBO banner, alongside Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting.

Posters and Trailers Set an Unsettling Tone

Netflix’s newly released key art emphasizes the film’s darker atmosphere. One poster focuses on Monaghan’s character alongside eerie handwritten references to tapping on glass and unlatched windows. Another centers on De Niro’s troubled expression beneath the ominous question, “Are you listening?”

Both designs connect to the unsettling nursery rhyme that plays an important role in North’s original novel and has become one of the story’s defining elements.

The trailers have similarly emphasized atmosphere and mounting tension instead of relying heavily on jump scares. Early footage highlights the uncomfortable reunion between Pete and Tom as they attempt to work together despite their years of estrangement.

At the same time, the mystery surrounding the imprisoned Frank Carter adds another layer to the story. The connection between Carter’s past crimes and the new abduction appears to be one of the film’s central sources of tension.

Netflix’s August Thriller

With North’s bestselling novel as its foundation, Ashcroft directing, and an ensemble led by Academy Award winner Robert De Niro, The Whisper Man has emerged as one of Netflix’s notable late-summer thriller releases.

The combination of psychological horror, a missing-child investigation, and a decades-old serial killer case gives the film plenty of material to work with. Its central father-son relationship also provides an emotional element alongside the mystery.

Netflix has confirmed that The Whisper Man will premiere globally on August 28. With the release approaching, its posters and trailers have already drawn attention from fans of psychological horror and true-crime-adjacent stories.

Whether the adaptation can capture the tension of North’s original novel remains to be seen, but the film arrives with a compelling premise, an experienced creative team, and a cast capable of carrying a dark and demanding thriller.
